We must have had good luck then.

I used that mouse heavily since 1999, Photoshop work, etc... using the side buttons like crazy, never had any issues. If the USB plug wasn't flaking out I'd still be using that mouse since all the buttons worked great and still had perfect action to them.

Edit: Just to be clear, we're talking about this mouse...

^^^^^

I had one of those for many years. It was far and away my favorite 5 button corded mouse. Once Bluetooth became commonplace on my Mac systems I got away from MS mice because IIRC they seemed to initially insist up their own wireless system that took up a USB port instead of supporting Bluetooth. By the time they finally got on the bandwagon I didn't care for the new mouse design and how it felt in my hand compared to the older design.

Man, I must suck at using mice if I kill them at that rate

Weird though, I googled this issue, and it seemed well known.

Yeahbut -- look at the actual wrists in the photos; the "palm's" wrist slants up but the "claw's" wrist stays low (straighter). I use the "claw" or pretty close to it, but instead of my arm coming down from the top and "bouncing" up off the table, my arm tends to come up from below the desk (short chair, and me slouching in it), and my palm is what rests on the desk, and only on the corner. So my arm-hand as a unit is actually quite straight. I believe that if I were to start "palming" the mouse, not only would it get all sweaty and gross, but it would actually cause me to start putting weight on my wrist, rather than my palm which is where my weight is now, and which can handle the load.

This is absolutely correct. Go to any computer or electronics retail and have a go at as many mice as you can get your hands on, select the best fit, be happy.

I'd say it's not often your computer ships with your favorite mouse and keyboard. My aluminum Apple keyboard and Logitech Cordless Click! Plus are inseparable.

The Intellimouse Optical does not have the side buttons, I bought one for my dad a long time ago. The Explorer was the next step up from that one, but is still considered in the Intellimouse Optical line.

That's right, thread isn't dead just yet.

I have 2 IntelliMouse Opticals sitting on my desk and they are exactly what is picture above (with a button on each side). Both of them are labeled as IntelliMouse Optical on the bottom.

Indeed the bottom does say that, but I can assure you good sir that the actual product is called the Intellimouse Explorer. The Intellimouse Optical has only left and right click with scroll wheel.

From Wikipedia:
The first commercially successful optical computer mice were the Microsoft IntelliMouse with IntelliEye and IntelliMouse Explorer, introduced in 1999

Not hard to understand.

Attractive and witty thread starter, absolutely riveting discussion material, pictures of decade-old wired mice.
