Howdy!
Just what the subject sez. Upgraded to Panther. I've already had Font Book blow up on me once so that's not an option.
I used Font Reserve under Jag and thought that was jolly good, but alas, the future of FR is hazy.
I'm not changing font sets all the time, and don't need super font powers (though I liked FR, it was really overkill). Font Book would be perfect if it actually worked.
So this leaves Suitcase... and what?

Suitcase, Font Agent Pro and MasterJuggler.
AFAIK they're all slow. I bought MasterJuggler because I couldn't stand the way the Suitcase folks always want full prices for any little update. Both had the same behaviour: they trashed around on the harddisk on login after a restart for several minutes, doing heaven knows what with each and every font that was controlled by the app.
Now I just use FontBook, and try not to change too much font-wise, as FB is really unstable.

I would try to fix "Font Book" if it's currently broken...what's it doing exactly?

God only knows.
The end result however is no more fonts. There one day, gone the next. It even ate some of the default fonts. I needed to pop open the installer packages to restore those.
It's trash I tell you!

Actually, the new version of Font Agent Pro (v2.0) is actually pretty fast. Still slow to launch with a lot of fonts, but using it is a lot better than previous versions.

This looks nice. I like the claimed corruption correction features. FR was a little lacking in that department.
This seems to be the way to go, unless someone has some FA bashing to do.
Thanks everyone for your responses!

Looks like they've updated Font Reserve? Has anyone tried it?

I just switched fulltime from the latest Suitcase to Font Agent Pro 2. I have bought and used FAP 1 before, but it was unbearably slow. Version 2, however, is everything I want in a font manager. Starting up is still slow (very slow too be honest), but otherwise the program is just brilliant!

Does Suitcase run the fontdatabase as a deamon like FontReserve?
