Hi all,
I've just reinstalled 10.6.3 from scratch, then updated with Software Update.
Everything is completely up-to-date, and I've installed *nothing* in addition to the OS, nor have I migrated over any of my previous user files. This is a completely vanilla installation in other words.
When I move icons in the dock the changes stick for a while, but then they move again. I've not yet noticed a pattern for where they move to.
Anything that anyone can think of that might be causing this? I can't see why I should need to trash any preferences, as they've only just been created by the installer!
Thanks a heap for any help,
Ben

That is a case of some Preferences not sticking, yes. Can you check who is the owner of each preference file and each enclosing folder? Ownership is controlled by the uid number, something that is assigned sequentially from 501 for the first user created. Depending on how your old settings were imported, something might have gone wrong there.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Det är precis det som är konstigt - jag har inte flyttat *någonting* ifrån gamla datorn, bara installerat operativsystemet!
Alla Dock filerna och Preferences mappen ägs av 501 (jag).

English for those not as amused by Swedish as I am (I don't get the chance to write it nearly often enough - sorry to inflict it on you, P ):
That's what's odd - I haven't moved anything from the old computer, just installed the OS.
All of the Dock files and the Preferences folder are owned by 501 (me).

A better question than where they move to would be when do they move? What are you doing that seems to move them to different locations: sleep/wake, restart, app start, etc.?
Or are you saying that all of a sudden, just sitting there, the icons are moving?

As strange as it sounds, Steve - they just move while I'm logged in doing something else.
If it's that "something else" that's special - I don't know. Nothing that I've noticed so far.

I've reinstalled again and it seems not to be doing it. Yet, at least
