So whats it going to be -

A PowerPC Mac in the next year or so?
An Intel in 1-2 years?
A cheap PowerPC now (mini, iBook) and then go Intel?

And what Mac have you got now?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I'll be with the Mac as long as my DP 2.0 continues to be supported at an acceptable level. When it no longer is, I'll have to assess the state of the Mactel platform. Hopefully I will have been wrong about SJ's chosen course, and all of my comments will have been wasted hand-wringing. I sincerely want to be wrong. I doubt that will be the case, though - I guess we'll just have to wait and see. In the mean time, I'll be flirting with Linux. It may be in a much worse state of usability than OS X, but at least its future won't be determined or jeopardized by a single capricious individual or company.

So it sucks, but its future suckiness is stable and assured.

I wanted to buy a high end PowerMac at the end of the year/begin 2006 but I'm going to buy a 20" Cinema Display and a Mac mini in Jan/Feb. Just to have something a bit more up to date (I have a PowerBook 867 at the moment). When the first generation of Intel powered PowerMacs come available I will buy the fastest machine available. If Apple is still in business of course . But I'm looking at it fairly positive. It all depends on the speed of the developers porting everything.

I was planning on a dual G5 with a 30" display around September. I'm going to wait now. Maybe get an MDD G4 or low dual G5 (2nd hand/refurb) to tide me over until '07 when I'll probably buy an Intel powered Mac.

I'm going to try to stretch the life span of my current Mac as long as possible. I'm not jumping ship right away, but when my Mac becomes obsolete in the next few years, my next purchase will be Windows/AMD.

Myself, I'm stuck between 2 and 3, my current G4 (sig) is 4 years old, and I have Tiger running on it. I don't find it slow to use, and its pretty well upgraded (180GB of hard drive space, 1.1GB RAM, 16x DL DVD writer), so a Mac mini as it is now would be a step back. Reading up on that Yonah, it looks good, and I have always fancied a laptop...

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Why wait? You can buy Intel Pentium M now.
I was thinking about getting a dual PowerMac G5 this year, but I'm looking more at the Alienware Aurora Athlon 64 instead, with XP Pro. Once OS X for x86 ships, I'm sure someone will figure out how to run OS X on it. My PowerBook will eventually take a spot next to my Newton (except that I'll still use the Newton), and I'll compare the then current Pentium M notebooks and buy what I prefer. If the Apple Pentium®Book offers more for the money I'll buy the MacTel, if not, then I'll buy the Alienware, or Dell, or VooDoo, or Sony, or whatever. I certainly will not buy another G4 or G5 based Mac. PowerPC is now a dead end. Mac OS X will run on any x86 PC, supported or not.

Windows, Mac OS, it'll be just different wrappers on the same boxes. MacTels will run Windows, too. Apple will try to lock down their Pentium PC's, but no doubt their will be plenty of unauthorized non-Apple PC's running OS X for Intel.

Using a 3 year old iMac G4 just now.
Before the Apple-Intel rumors surfaced I had the money and intentions to go out and buy a Powermac G5 plus 23" ACD. I thought I'd hang on a few weeks and see what was announced at the keynote. Then of course the rumors appeared and now I'm pretty glad I waited. So now I'm just about to go ahead and order the display, but I'll just get a mac mini to tide me over till the end of 2007 at which point I'll probably go for a top of the line iMac, or a mid-range Powermac

Just like how the XBox360 and a PowerMac are the same because they both use PPC chips?

No, but Pentium M Apple laptop and Pentium M Dell laptop will use the same CPU and the same architecture. PowerMac's G5 and XBox 360's PPC are very different chips.

If I remember correctly, when the first PPCs came out in 1994, they sucked (speed-wise) compared to the last version of the 68040 Macs running the 68040 code. It took years for "Native" PPC apps to come out and for the OS to evolve to be PPC only (OS8.5).

Since OSX has been living a double life on Intel hardware, the OS will be Intel ready sooner than later. There will be a lag in the apps running optimally on the new Intel HW, though. Fat Binaries will return for a while (apps that have both Intel and PPC code).

I think it's best to buy a PPC NOW, ride out the transition with an older machine, then buy the Intel version about a year or two AFTER the transition. Do you REALLY want to be an Intel guinea pig in 2006? I'll stick with the PowerPC today. 2007 I'll get whatever is out then.

I have a Dual 2.5 G5, My next Mac will (hopefully) have Dual blazing Intel's (Pentium M? Xeon? Newer?) Inside.

I am looking forward to what exactly Intel will bring! Blazing VPC? Dual Boot Configs? Cheaper Video Cards with no Mac-Specific Delay? PCI-X? Etc, Etc.

My planned purchase of PowerBook G5 just before Christmas has definitely been derailed

Perhaps I should just get a Dell or Sony notebook for the time being?

I am very surprised that Apple didn't talk to AMD to use their processors

The Dell Inspiron XPS gaming laptop is pretty cool. 17" 1920 x 1200 widescreen, 256MB NVIDIA® GeForceTM Go 6800 ULTRA with PCI Express x16 interface, 8.6 lbs, and 2 or 2.13 GHz Intel Pentium M 760 or 770 processor. It's one of the first high performance Centrino laptops.

As if the PB were going to go G5 this Christmas no matter what. In fact, that's likely one of the factors in the jump, that IBM can't produce a mobile G5 chip.

Like alot of people here, I was hoping to get a new PowerMac in the next 10 months, but now I suppose I'll just hold on to mine a little longer and see what the Intel offerings are in '07.

I bet the PowerBook/iBook lineup is the first to be updated. Then the mini and eMac (if it's kept) and finally the iMac and PowerMac, everything basically falling into the same release pattern.

I think we'll see some updates to the PM line before they are Intelized. I might get one of the last gen PPC G5's to last me a while before going for an Intelized Mac. That way they'll be at 2nd or 3rd Rev before I need to get one. Just me.

Most of the userbase when it comes out will still be PPC. I think it will be optimized for both, maybe 2 versions will be available, depending on which machine it ships with...

Nothing's precluding a 10.4.10+.

I was planning to ride my 800MHz G4 iBook as far as it will take me. I may have to take it a bit farther than I had expected, but that doesn't bother me too much.

I sold my 12" 1.33Ghz PB last week on eBay knowing something big was coming at either WWDC or MacWorld in July. So glad I did.

I'm Mac-free at the moment w/o my PB (hey, I work in a lab full of G5s...when I go home the last thing I want is more computing) but I'll definitely pick up a Intel-PB when they arrive. Going this semester without a tiny laptop in my bookbag for quick e-mail checks during class will sting, admittedly.

But hey, engagement rings are expensive and somethings have gotta go!

If they really had to have a sticker, I'd like to see a "Powered by OS X" sticker or something of that ilk.

I'm not sure that cheap would be the correct word. Definitely not going to spend thousands of dollars on a dual G5 that ill be obsolete in two years. My get an iMac as a backup in case my dual 450 dies.
