I heard somewhere that it is easier to see the screen on the black iPod because its surrounded by a darker color. In theory this makes sense but also sounds a little ridiculous?
What is the truth on this matter?

The screen will appear brighter on a black iPod as the contrast will be higher than against the white.

It's mostly an optical illusion, but that doesn't mean that it's not valid. Many people prefer TVs with black bezels around the screen for similar reasons -- it doesn't distract the eye from what is on the screen.

Alright. Is this just a marginal difference in clarity/brightness or does is it worth buying the black one for this reason? I like the white iPod slightly better but would be willing to purchase the black one instead if it's really worth it.
What are your thoughts?

Just go to a store and check it out for yourself if you can.

I will if I need to but if people have already looked into this I would like to hear their opinions. The store is somewhat out of the way.

Yeah, if the white looks better to you get it, it still works to watch movies on. It's not horribly distracting at all...but there is a valid point to the black being easier on the eyes.
You're probably not going to be satisfied until you go to a store and look for yourself though. Happy shopping.

lol just looked up at my TV and realised that it does have an ugly black surround on the screen with a grey body on the outside of that, that could be the theory behind the design
