Why does Ellen feel that it is cool to embarrass an 88 year old woman on national TV like this? Why would she say stuff like "I love you" when she doesn't really mean it, and she only loves how this woman entertains her at her expense?

Ellen should be taken off of the air for this unacceptable behavior that is not becoming of her.

I don't see the problem with it, the 88 year old seemed to get a huge kick out of it and it was prob the best day she had in years.

Gladys doesn't have a single moment's problem talking to Ellen, or from getting any sort of pseudo-crap from her either. They've been chatting (on air) for years.

That's kind of what I was wondering. Ellen probably made this woman's day, and if we can't laugh at ourselves, we should just give up. Good grief.

I think it was funny. It sounds like a fake person, like Roy D Mercer or someone. But it seems like it was a lot of fun.

Gladys is real. She's actually been on Ellen's show, and she's been interviewed by TV and newspaper folks in Austin. A nice old lady who has fun talking with Ellen.

First time I've ever seen some of Ellen D. Show, I've just seen her stand up comedy on HBO.... I don't understand why this was embarassing for the old lady, I loved this.

I don't get it.

I hate Ellen, and she's normally really on my nerves.

However, in this clip, I can find nothing wrong.
Believe me, if there was anything remotely wrong with how Ellen behaved, I'd point it out.

I'll file this under "Besson is weird".

What on earth makes you think that woman was embarrassed? She obviously has her faculties intact, even factoring in the occasional nip, and seemed quite pleased with the experience. I'm really not seeing the indignation here. If I understand your point, you're saying that if you called your favorite celebrity, and they found you funny, charming, and endearing, so much so that they called you back and invited you out to California or wherever to meet and appear together, that you'd be offended?

Or are you applying victim status to this delightful lady because she's old? If that's the case, I know some pretty with it geezers that'll box your ear and tell you "get the hell off my lawn for being one of those smartass punks that don't know a goddam thing about anything because your parents didn't raise you right and pull your pants up and put your damn hat on right. What the hell's wrong with you? You retarded or something?*".

*The geezer portrayed in the example above is based wholly on a real geezer who will box your ear too if you don't watch it smartass.

I'm with SWG on this one. Did you hear the sound of excitement and enthusiasm in this woman's voice? She was having a blast talking to Ellen. And I am guessing that if Gladys is okay with saying on TV she drinks a little she is okay with the good-natured teasing she was getting from Ellen. And what a sweet lady she sounds like. Gladys reminds me a bit of my paternal grandmother who was still active and feisty well into her 80s as well. It's a shame, though, that Gladys doesn't like to travel; She would be a hoot to see in person on the show. I hope Ellen puts Gladys on her Christmas card list. That ought to make Gladys really happy.

Gladys gets a big thumbs-up from me.

Allow me to use an anecdote to explain what is going on here...

Have you read Moby Dick? Moby Dick is a novel by Herman Melville. The story tells the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specific whale, Moby-Dick, a white whale of tremendous size and ferocity. Comparatively few whaleships know of Moby-Dick, and fewer yet have encountered him. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg. Ahab intends to take revenge.

Consider that Ellen may have had parents that she didn't get along with, maybe parents that drank too much. She is using Gladys as a means to get back at her parents by exposing her problems and frailty of her old age. This is a symbol of what is wrong with America right now. Al Queda exposes our frailties daily by mocking us in Arab media just like Ellen mocks Gladys here, and Democrats allow big spending bills to be passed that put us all at a much greater risk towards jihad invoked by foreign agents.

While we can look at a story about a whale and not be terribly concerned, we cannot continue to mock our neighbors and expect to be safe. This is a small price to pay for our freedoms, a price that Gladys has paid, and a price that Ellen has not had to pay being a member of the media elite.

It's real easy Spher. There's basically four types of people.

1) Doof.
2) People who are as awesome as Doof.
3) Blokes who are upset that they're not as awesome as Doof.
4) Chicks who are upset because they haven't had any Doof sausage time yet.

That's it. It's that simple.
