The problem occurs on the MacBook of a friend of mine. The mentioned apps are quitting immeadiately after they were opened, so I figure it is something communications releated. I saved a crash log for Mail:

Host Name: xxxxxxxxxxxxx-computer
Date/Time: 2006-10-17 12:21:03.827 +0200
OS Version: 10.4.8 (Build 8L2127)
Report Version: 4

Command: Mail
Path: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
Parent: WindowServer [57]

Version: 2.1.1 (752.3)
Build Version: 1
Project Name: MailViewer
Source Version: 7520300

PID: 146
Thread: 2

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xd4c275f0

-> full Log as .txt in Zip-Archive

I already did the obvious (permissions, verify HD, prefs deleted), any further ideas? What does the Crash Log say? I'd like to avoid an archive and install…

I really want to solve the problem for him, since I talked him into getting a mac in the first place, and now he can't use such substancial apps.

Archive and install without all the languages and so on takes around 10 minutes, it's by far the easiest way to solve such problems, and the quickest. Does this happen in another user account?

Like I say though, I would A+I and save myself time and hassle.

I don't think this is the smartest way, since the solution might be even easier. Besides, it usually takes more than 10 minutes. I'd like to save it one last option.
