PB 15": Combodrive rejects dvds

Hi,
My 1.5ghz Powerbook has decided it doesn't like dvds anymore.If I put a dvd in it doesn't even mount, it just ejects the dvd.The dvd player app doesn't start either.I tested this with two brand new dvds.
I'm running 10.4.2, my combo drive looks like this:

update:the slot loading superdrive rejects and ejects audio cds also   Is it hard to repair a pb combo drive ?

Don´t know if it´s hard to do. Concerning the Tibooks it was relatively easy but i´m not sure about the Al´s. Are you still under warranty/applecare? Does the drive make loud "crunch" noises when a dvd is inserted. My Tibooks drive failed after three years and did make this crunch noises...

No crunching sound, it attempts to read the drive briefly but then rejects the disc.I might reformat and see if it makes any difference.I repaired disk permissions but this didn't help.

My 12" RevB has been sent in because of the exact same symptoms - it tries to read the disc and then gives up and spits it back out. My PB hasn't come back yet, but they suspected that it was hardware problems.
If fixing software, PMU etc doesn't work, you should call applecare (if you are still on it). If not, perhaps this is a good time to get a superdrive upgrade?

go to any computer store, get a disk drive cd cleaner and pop it in. my tipb was doing this and i cleaned it and zapped the PRAM, no more problems

I got a cd cleaner but no joy.The drive doesn't allow the cd cleaner to spin around.This cleaner has two little "brushes" on the surface, is this ok ?
- reset pram.
- reset power manager.
- fixed hd permissions.
- created a new users, tried there.
I can't think of anything else, any more suggestions ? I really don't want this superdrive to be broken

Why not take into an Apple Store and have someone at the Genius Bar look at it?

Good idea but the closest applestore is 1 hours flight away in London I live in Ireland.

one good troubleshooting technique is to enable a second admin user and switch to that user. Does your optical drive problem persist? After that, if you've got a bootable external drive (eg firewire) then does the problem persist when you're booted from that? This tests whether or not your user prefs are responsible (and some very weird problems are solved this way.)
