what makes these different? is the cheaper one worse or should i spend the extra cash?

My preferences would be either Crucial or OWC. Both I find to be very reputable companies that will stand behind their warranty. I don't think you'll get any performance boost from using high-price, superlow latency RAM. Since there's really no way to tweak RAM timings on the Mac, you wont be able to get any benefit from it.

The difference is mostly labelling and testing.

I second the recommendation for Crucial.
