Hm... anyone else get the distinct impression the author doesn't really know what he's on about?

At last some common sense expressed in this madness to rush to incorporate OS X. Yep, my copy will be here soon and I have the right hardware to support it. BUT... am "I" up for the challenge? Like most of you, I have had some experience with Beta software, but this is entirely different kettle of fish being... a brand new OS. I am filled with tremendous excitement , and a very hefty amount of trepidation. Oh sure, I will be backed up, but my system under OS 9.0.4. has never worked better. Still, knowing the risk involved, I am compelled to move forward. That said, I am NOT going to be whining here with things that break. My god, it's already started with buffoons wailing about paying $30.00 for PB. Christ, these same miscreants probably think nothing of spending that on a pizza and a lousy bottle of wine. (More likely beer as their palates couldn't appreciate wine). Sorry, I know that sounds pompous, but these whiners cause me to be embarrassed for the whole Mac community.
Hoping we all can use some diplomacy and decorum in our attempts to constructively criticize what we find with PB.

it's called FUD - Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt. everybody in the tech business, prolly everyone in any business, uses it to some extent.
even though he may be right in some points, don't use this article as a source of info.. the valid points will be redundant elsewhere and it's a bad idea to use an article from a manufactuer (including Apple's hotnews and such) as a first source.

not only a manufactuer...a manufactuer of UPGRADING TECHNOLOGY....:-) He does have some good valid points, but notice that everything has a spin towards upgrading your machine. He even suggests buying a G3 or Beige to run MacOS X, instead of a new G4 - machines that might have to be upgraded next year in order to run OS X.I well....:-) Plus, no matter what he says...it IS cool to be the first one on the block with MacOS X....:-)

yet another article on MacOS X:
http://macworld.zdnet.com/2000/09/14/unix.html
"...Mac OS X is so interesting because it is Unix -- or, rather, one of the many Unix variants -- through and through. Strip away the colorful candy shell, and any number of bearded, suspendered old-school Unix hackers would feel right at home inside the confines of Mac OS X. In fact, if you ignore the graphical user interface (GUI) entirely and limit your interaction with the operating system to an 80-by-25-character text window, you'd be hard-pressed to identify Mac OS X as anything other than a true-blue FreeBSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) release, on which OS X is based. POSIX-compliant, networked, and multi-user-capable, Mac OS X can match Unix feature-for-feature and foible-for-foible."

Amen to RWoelk. OS X beta is 100% worth the meager cost of $30. I have OS X DP4 and am salavating at receiving my copy of the beta. OS X takes all of 30 minutes to get used to, with all of it's new interface and widgets.
I think the NewerTech article is right on the money for the most part. Conservative opinions, but also a good reality check. One thing he is missing though, is that (atleast for the public beta) Apple needs the help of a few hundred thousand Mac loyalists to get this puppy fine tunned.
After having used OS X DP4 for some time now, I would strongly suggest installing it on a seperate partition, and keeping OS 9 in its current, functional condition. Dont try to replace 9 with X. This is after all just a beta.
Install it, play with it, learn it to what ever depth you feel comfortable, and for God's sake - send Apple your feedback! They have done an impressive ammount of work for OS X, now it is our turn. Get the beta. Let's all help Apple kick the competition in the teeth and stomp them into the mud.
