I've got a thing for Asian cultures, I'm studying Chinese at college, and my past four boyfriends have been Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Thai-American. I'm sure a number of you have similar interests and... attractions.

I've heard a bit about plastic surgery operations done for Asians who want to make their eyelids more roundish. Cool, I'm all for the idea of body modification. I'm a transhumanist myself.

But what about some of us Caucasians who want Asian-looking eyes? Is there a procedure for us yet, or no? I would think it could be done for international spies, people on the run, etc.

When I think of the word "transhumanist," I recall the article I read about the brother who had his arm cut off and gave it to his younger brother (who already has 2 arms in thier normal positions) to connect to his chest in the name of art...

It's called Asian double eyelids. Don't do it. I heard some damaging their eyes due to it because of incompenent plastic surgeons. I think all races are beautiful because of the unique differences. I'm sure your previous boyfriends dated you because they like your "Caucasian" look.

What the hell...surgery for eyes? I am all vietnamese and my eyes look exactly like caucasian eyes! Why does everybody make fun of my eyes, even though it looks like theirs! F'ing stereotypes. Why do people get surgery to look like someone else? Can't you just be happy with how you look?

People have to accept what they are. And let the world accept what and who you are-- there is NO SHAME in whatever race, or culture, you are from. Whoever does not accept you as you are has no respect for you as a human being, and thus is not worth even dealing with.

In South Korea and Japan, they often make a wrinkle in their eyelids, too, for the lack of a better word. A Korean-German told me once, Koreans could immediately tell, she wasn't 100 % Asian, coz of her eyelids (she looked completely Asian to me at that time (it was before I went to Japan, so I was less sensitive to the subtle differences)).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I think a caucasian getting plastic surgery to look more Asian is stupid.

The rest of you won't look Asian...are you going to change that too?

MEMO: YOU ARE NOT ASIAN.

You remind me of that lizard guy that had his entire body tattooed to look like a huge green lizard...anyone have a pic of that somewhere? We talked about that once here.

Why can't people be happy with what they have? There are people out there with cancer and diseases slowly killing them and you're worried about trying to look Asian? Time to rethink your priorities. I tell my children when they act like that to be careful or God will throw something REALLY big their way(s) to worry about.

seen lots of examples of the eye op in China and HK, lots of korean girls go for it too.

I actually think it looks great, makes the eyes look much larger.

Why not, I've heard it plenty of times. If I pull my own eyes back like that I definitely lose some vision.

Landos_Mustache, with you I don't know whether to laugh or just shake my head.

I have this graphic of a grown man sitting there stretching his eyes and looking around his office cubicle oblivious to the fact that people think he's an office freak.

It is a silly operation, like any other cosmetic one. Any serious surgeon should refuse to do, eyes cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation, nose job, liposuction... Plastic surgery should be reserved for reconstruction only, like having breast reconstruction after being mutilated during a masectomy, or clef palet, or any facial diformity.

Plastic surgery doesn't work. I'm sorry, but people always end up looking worse when they get face work. I think they delude themselves into thinking it looks good or something. But everyone else can see the flaws that the procedures produce.

But you knew that.

Makes sense. You should try and steer future conversations with your coworkers towards eyes so you can ask them.

I have a friend over in China right now. She's the most pale, blue-eyed, blond girl ever, and someone on the street offered her and her friends some cream, but he didn't speak English so it took them a while to figure out it was skin bleaching cream. It's kind of sad that so many people only want to be what they're not.

It is because of the high population and competitiveness to get jobs.

Yellow skin is becoming unfashionable, being short doesn't help with getting jobs either.

Since the population all has black hair and dark eyes you need to do something to make yourself stand out unfortunately.

Exactly.

As an Asian dude myself, I can say, majority of the girls I find attractive are white (and that's not simple because I see more white girls). No need to change yourself. That's not to say, of course, there aren't attractive asian girls out there...

I guess my point is--if you want to look asain, make absolutely sure you are doing it for YOU and not because you hope it will attract more asain guys.

Ok - maybe a dumb question.....

Isn't there more than just eyes that make one look asian (i.e. flatter facial profile)? Just going by this "procedure'... I already have "double eye-lids".... and there is no friggin way somone is going to confuse me as a non-asian. Although I do look a hint "hispanic" in some summer pictures....

With the exception of my wife, all my previous relationships were with non-asians.. I think folks just prefer someone different.... "eat steak everyday, you're gonna crave chicken".

WTF are you talking about?

I dunno, but somehow I'd have to say having pink hair in China would probably limit your job choices.

You people are very quick to point to the racism card here...

The man's got a legitimate question that he's frightened to ask in real life (because they'd call him a racist). Anyways, people with eyes that are less almond shaped do not have poorer peripheral vision. Same amount of light reaches the pupil in either case (all that extra white you see around eyes doesn't help sight at all).

The question was not designed to be racist (I would assume) he is just ignoring being PC. Now STFU and quit putting words in the poor guys mouth. Pulling the OMG RACIST card is just confirming what the racists want. You are saying that the other group is different and special and deserves treatment as so. Can't we all just agree to get rid of all these damn terms that separate and degrade? (This would also include racial and sexual affirmative action. Why not switch it to how it was intended to be, a way for socially and economically impaired people to get back on their feet? Race should not even play a factor here, nor should it anywhere [Applications should NEVER ask for race as I see it].)

(Now, it doesn't help that you used the word 'Asian eyes' to describe eyes that are more slit like than you're used to. This is like speaking in public, please try and keep it Politically Correct or else loads of people get cranky at you, as you can see.)

Asian double eyelids? You've got that round the wrong way.

The Asian eyelid is called a "hooded eyelid." Caucasians have a "creased eyelid."

In South Korea, among young women, those who have not had an operation to achieve creased eyelids are a small minority.

The President of South Korea -- President Roh -- has had the operation.

His publicist released a statement claiming the operation was necessary for medical reasons, because his droopy eyelids were irritating his eyes.

I find this incredible.

Some of the operations, as has been said, are done by unqualified "doctors". Often they are only optometrists -- whose job is, or should be, simply to prescribe eye-glasses -- as opposed to ophthalmologists or cosmetic surgeons. These charlatans go to China to learn the procedure. Such is the demand.

One rather well-known result of a bad "creased eyelid operation" is eyes that pop open at night. Korean men joke that you can tell if a woman has had the operation (some Koreans' eyelids are naturally creased) because she sleeps with her eyes open.

Oh, and this is also incredible:

The social pressure to get this operation performed is HUGE in South Korea.

* Agents force their clients (would-be entertainers of any sort) to get it done. Sometimes it is written into their contract.

* Employers sometimes ask their employees to get the operation, especially where public relations are involved. Sometimes it is paid for by the company.

* And I have met a girl whose mother FORCED her to get the operation to "improve her chances of making a good impression in the competitive job market."

The operation cost about a hundred dollars. The results were breathtakingly bad. This "doctor" had incised the crease far too high. Her eyelids looked like Venetian blinds. The poor girl wore sunglasses to school, and cried when she was made to take them off.

And her experience is not unique. It is a well-known fact that Korean mothers sometimes force this upon their daughters, along with the "tongue operation" (where the frenulum linguae -- the fold of skin under the tongue -- is cut to "improve" English pronunciation abilities).

I find the tongue operation more disturbing. It is frequently done on young children prior to starting school!

I have even heard that, if a child has to go under the knife for some reason, the Korean doctor will ask if the parents would like the frenulum linguae severed -- much like Western doctors used to sometimes conveniently whip out the appendix or tonsils in the course of a non-related operation.
