Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a powerbook g4 15in for my birthday.
At my local Apple Authorized dealer, they have a sale for the following powerbook g4:

PowerBook G4 M8980L; PowerPC G4 Processor 1.0GHz with Velocity Engine; 256MB DDR-333 RAM; 60GB Hard Drive; Combo 8x24x10x24 DVD-ROM/CD-RW Drive; 56K v.92 Modem; 10/100/1000 Network Adapter; Bluetooth 1.1 Adapter; 15.2" Widescreen Active Matrix Display; Mac OS X

With Free:
1) Apple Airport Extreme Card
2) MacAlly 3 in 1 Travel Kit includes iceJr USB Optical Mini Mouse, Hub-Mini
4 Port USB Slim Hub and LP-1394 Firewire retractable 5ft. cable.

Price of this system is: $1,399

Is this a good deal? I have till July 25, to get this deal because its a special that they are running.

Is it better to wait and then get a laptop after the new iMac announcements or wait longer for a lower price of the current models? Or is this deal a "steal"?

Thank you very much,
Paul

I think a better deal is:

MacResQ chopped $100 off its price on the reseller-refurbished PowerBook G4/667 Titanium with 15.2-inch TFT, 256MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, DVD-CDRW drive, and 56k modem. It now costs $899.99 and shipping is free via coupon code "SHIP50". A 90-day reseller warranty applies

Hey,
thanks for your reply.
Do you think if I wait a couple more months, the current line will be as cheap as this model?
I have a powerbook g4 12in 867 right now, would this new PB be better in performace..by, alot?
If i were to buy this powerbook g4 15in, would Tiger ready for it? (core audio, video, etc)
thank you very much,
Paul T

The performance difference would be a little better...I went from a 12" 867 to a 12" 1GHz and it was faster, most likely because of the larger L2 cache. I dont think the latest revisions will be cheaper until the next revision. The 1GHz PB will be supported by Tiger's Core Image/Video.

Supported graphics cards:
ATI Radeon 9800 XT
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
ATI Radeon 9600 XT
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
NVIDIA GeForceFX Go 5200
NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200

I think the upgrade would definately be worth it...You gain allot more than processor performance.

Firewire 800
USB 2.O
Larger L2 cache
PC Card Slot
64MB ATI Radeon 9600
DVI/S-Video Out
Larger higher res screen

Incredible price, that's $500 less than any other site I have investigated. I would buy it immediately if I had access to this deal!

That sounds like the deal I got at MicroCenter not long ago but I also got a free printer (a Canon something or other. I have a great printer so I didn't bother taking the new one out of the bag). Have you checked how many your store has in stock? I know my store had 10 the day I called and by the next day when I went to get one they were down to three, including mine (which was on hold).

The Airport Extreme card takes about 5 min. to install. I installed it & the base station the night I brought the pb home & they've been working great all over my house ever since.

As for waiting, I decided against it. You can always play that game when it comes to computers. It's summer and I have more time now to get a machine, learn a machine (I'm a switcher), adapt to the laptop lifestyle (setting up shop on bistro and picnic tables), and to research and get all the toys I want to go with it. Your situation may be different & it may be worth it to you to wait and get a 1.33GHz for similar money in a few months.

Great price for a Great PB, although you could get a new 12" combo for the same price and get an iPod for $100 from Apple direct. If you like the bigger screen of the 15" then by all means go for it, but I perosnally like the portability of my 12" and wouldn't trade it for the world (Maybe a Rev C but thats it).
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)
