there i was
ready to buy the new 17
i wanted to pay and have something in my hand
i had already conceded the fact that i would have to settle for the 4200rpm drive and update later...
but.... here i am at the store
and then they tell me:
there are no RAM chips in the stores
only online
that means i canNOT take the machine home with the 1gig chip
i have NO desire to own the machine with the 512... it is NOT enough for this powerhouse... we all know that
and updating later will cost MUCH MORE

so....
i leave with nothing
and now i'm another day behind the world in ordering online and i won't have any new baby to tuck in tonight

boo hoo

someone comfort me please

Wouldn't the RAM be cheaper by buying it third party?

the airport extreme
the isight camera
the brenthaven carry bag
the keynote deal
the final cut express deal
the .mac deal
maybe a dr. bot thingy
and that ipod at the discount

see........
Apple was going to get plenty of my money tonight if only they'd have the forthought to have my 1gig RAM stick in stock

I don't understand. 512 MB is more than sufficient for most things and you could order the extra chip when you got home and installed it yourself in about 30 seconds.

Why pay more for Apple RAM?

Greg, friend, you are missing the point:

Apple marks up their RAM in a HUGE way, I usually try to buy my macs with the least amount of RAM possible.

In summary, DONT BUY RAM FROM APPLE!

you are right
they will still have that 17 for me tomorrow
i guess i let my feelings about being misled about the RAM
i had called ealier in the day and was told they had it and that it could be installed before i took the powerbook home.
at 40 years of age, i should have learned to look past that by now. if i had i would be entering this post from my new 17 instead of my 2 year old gateway p4 1.6ghz

Greg,
The $649 figure is the cost of one 1 gig stick/chip, Apple is going to put in two 512 sticks/chips and charge you $300 for the second 512 stick/chip.

Apple charges $300 for 1GB of RAM using 2 SO DIMMS. That price makes no sense, seeing you can buy an extra 512MB from Crucial for $140. However, 1 GB DIMMS from Apple are $400. This is considerable less than anyone I have seen. But why they charge $1100 for 2GB of RAM using 2 DIMMS when they are $400 each is beyond me.

the point is that IN THIS CASE ONLY Apple seems to be CHEAPER than the competition by offering the 1gig stick for only $300.00....... FAR LESS than others...
in only this ONE case

If that's true, it's probably because they figure they can take that half gig chip and sell it to someone else for $300.

that means that if i buy the chip aftermarket it'll cost MUCH more whether i buy it FROM Apple or someone else....
so it makes sense IN THIS CASE to buy the computer WITH the 1gig stick ALREADY in place
so....
THAT is the reason why i did NOT buy it at the store with only the 512 in place.....

what to do?
what to do?
what to do?

Let me make sure that I and you know what you're talking about. You say the Apple Store said they would remove the half gig chip from your PowerBook and replace it with a one gig chip for $300?

When I look at the online store, it says you can get two half gig chips instead of one for an extra $300, or a one gig chip instead of the half gig for $400. What's the story?

i'm sorry
you are right
the 1gig stick is $400.00
educational discount is $360.00

however.....
at $400.00
the price for the 1gig stick is STILL cheaper than any other place i've seen
and we want the 1gig stick, of course, to keep room for another IF the desire should arise in the future to bring it up to the full 2gig

Ok, keep in mind that by doing that, you're losing the half gig that's in there. If you buy elsewhere, you'll be up to 1.5 gigs. Just food for thought. Good luck with the decision.

Spalding, why didn't you just go to ANOTHER STORE to buy a RAM chip?? YOu don't have to special order it or anything for chirssakes. If you were so anxious, you should have stopped at a CompUSAS or something, Grated, you would've had to pay tax, but then again that doesn't seem to be a problem since you were gonan buy everything locally anyway.

Jeez.

$108 for a 512 stick for the new powerbook.

These guys are right, memory is usually cheaper other places than the apple store

The 512Mb that's in the PowerBook consists of two 256Mb chips, not one 512. To get it to 1Gb, you'd have to buy two 512s, or one 1Gb. If you left in the 1 original 256, you would then have 1.25Gb

Sort of on topic: I got 512M from OWC today for $122, shipped. Well, I'll have it Friday, anyway.

The 17" model he's thinking of buying comes stock with one 512MB chip, not two 256s.

Then they've changed that, because, up until now, all 17" PBs came with two RAM sticks installed. I'll have to check into that.

Nope - you need DDR RAM. Make really, really sure that you're getting the right stuff before you order it or you'll kick yourself.

Oh... there there... look at it this way, a lot of us first hand 17" users had to wait almost 3 months or longer in order to get our hands on our babies for the very first time.... at least you won't have to wait as long as we have...
