Im new to OS 10, and the mighty mouse.

i thought the MM could be programed to do various functions by tapping

various positions on the mouse.

this might have been with 2d party software but I cant find any.

The Mouse Preferences panel in OS 10.10.3 (and maybe earlier) allows the various mouse buttons to run scripts from the Scripts folder. There are some scripts provided with the OS, but none for Close or Quit. Maybe you could approach it that way.

its a shame the 3d party MM software is gone.

Have you tried BetterTouchTool ?
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
