this seems to be fairly difficult to do

something about resource forks

SimplyRAR does this

as does Unison creating file.001 units

I dont know what file.001 are but they seem to be able to be rejoined.

any thoughts on spliting files on a mac ?

split&concat wont split files w resource forks.

thanks

Zip the file first and split the zip?

EDIT: Or just use good ol' tar and split that. Turns out the Mac version will include resource forks cleanly.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Tar is an extremely old UNIX tool that is commonly used to archive files. Since you knew about split and cat, I figured you had heard about it. See the page linked above for how you use it, but basically

Code:
tar -cf archive.tar file1 file2 file3
to add files file1, file2 and file3 to archive.tar, and

Code:
tar -xf archive.tar
to get the files out again.

You first claimed it was difficult, and now you're sticking with your original approach, which seems to work its fine
