Firefox will pop-up a couple of windows when there's an update available. I don't believe they actually start the download, though. Firefox is on a regular update schedule now, so that's why it seems there are a lot of updates.
If you want to initiate a DL and install, simply go to Firefox>About Firefox. There should be an Update button in the popup window.

Previously, I had version 37.0.1 of Firefox, and upgraded it to Version 38.0 on my own. Today, when I launched it, I was informed of a new version, 38.0.5, that is available. I went ahead and downloaded it myself (after doing a google search), installed it, and it works fine.
When you downloaded it yourself, how did you install it? What I do with most such upgrades that allow "dragging" is to drag the new version to the folder containing the prior version. I then get the standard "Replace" dialogue, click yes, and let the prior version be replaced. I then launch the new version, just to make sure things are fine. And, for most (if not all) such programs, that works perfectly.
Of course, some upgrades do not allow this. But, at least for Firefox and Google Chrome (and quite a lot of other software I have), dragging works fine.

I do what you do but take the older FF and put it in a folder, just incase i want to go back to it.
its strange that the "download now" feature while in thed program does not upgrade FF. it did in the past
I get the download but then nothing when I restart FF

OK, I just tried your method of installing the latest version, 38.0.5, of Firefox on my Mac Mini (did not replace version 38.0), separately launched each one, and each one worked fine. I then went ahead and moved version 38.0.5 to my "Internet" folder (within my Applications folder), got the standard "Replace ..." dialogue box, and version 38.0.5 still runs fine.
Can you run the prior version (which you put in a folder)?
If you either have a backup, or the original v 38.0 dmg file, maybe just drag v 38.0 to the trash, install 38.0.5, and then try and run it.
