i have an HP LaserJet 1300

it's done great service for a zillion years

however, it now 'paper-jams' every 2 or 3d piece of paper for a job.

I have to reach in and pull that paper out and reset the HP

its a pain.

on the other hand I don't print that much

but a fair amound around TaxTime

Id perfer to stay with a laserjet

unless there is a good but fairly priced ink-jet unit that only prints black

ie does not require color cartrdge replacemenets is all you need is black ink

thanks

I like the Brother HL-L2300D a great deal. Wired, duplex.

Product page:
Brother HL-L2300D | Compact Personal Laser Printer

Amazon page, $90.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B00NQ1CLTI

The HL-L2300DW is 802.11n also, and $20 more.

thank you for your suggestion.

HP as a similarly priced item

but I needed something soon, so i got this :

HP LaserJet Pro M402n Printer | Staples®

one good thing about Apple, it does the chit-chat with the OS

and its ready to go.

its a bit noisy, but I dont use it enough for that to be a concern to me

thaks again.

Might as well make this "printer talk".

I have an HP now. It's not horrible or anything, but Brother seems to be what HP used to be in terms of printers. Just get one. Doesn't matter which. They're all good.

Yeah... for HP, that was a long time ago.

For me laser printers must have two things:
(1) Postscript
(2) Built-in networking

A third one is neat, but optional:
(3) Apple Air Print (that allows you to print directly from iOS devices)

In a pinch, you can live without built-in networking. Point (1) means you never, ever, ever have to worry about drivers. Last month, my university had to replace my Canon color laser which was great in every respect, but one: the driver would sometimes inexplicably crash when printing regular pdf files. Sometimes it would work if I printed from Acrobat instead of Preview, but in the end it got so bad that they replaced it with a new Epson color laser — with Postscript.

Nowadays Brother printers have become the default recommendation, and it feels as if HP has been coasting a little too long on its reputation. If you want to an alternative, have a look at Kyocera and Oki printers. Kyocera printers in particular are very well-built for the price, even the cheaper models last upwards of 50,000 pages in real life.

Duplex is nice.

Brother has treated me well so far. Recommended one to a friend. He likes it.

The main beef I have with my HP is the crazy-aggressive power saving mode.

Indeed. I couldn't work properly without it.
