Hi all,

I have an education class imac G5 coming soon my way :-) . From what meager info I could get on this machine (1,6 GHz, 17" machine), I know it comes without a DVD-CD drive. Now, maybe one of you folks would know if it is possible to add a standard internal CD burner inside the machine. I guess the connections should be there or not ?

Essentially, the educ machine must be a pretty close match to the consumer machine : same case, same screen, same components but the processor and the video card...

Do you have some info on this ?

Big thanx,
X0X0X from Calli

I'm not sure what an "education class" iMac is, but the 1.6 GHz iMac listed on my Apple Store education page ($1199) has a combo drive on it (DVD-ROM/CD-RW).

Is there an "education class" iMac with less than that?

the $1099 1.6Ghz iMac will not have any sort of optical drive.
i'm not sure you can install one yourself, but i would surmise that you could... i can't imagine apple using a different enclosure/motherboard. they probably just plug the CD slot with a removable plastic cover. however, the one with the combo drive also has 40GB more space for only $100 more. not sure if this purchase was your decision, but this would be cheaper than adding the combo drive yourself.

there is always the not so elegant option of an external burner. a 76 dollar dvd-rw and a 25 dollar 5.25" case means that for about 100 dollars you can have a fast dvd-burner

Where can you get a 5.25" case for $25?
