The broad, square top of the Dreamcast was covered in symmetrical features. The top of the PS3 is bare except for a PS3 on one side and a cutout on the same side for the drive bay, giving it the look of a featureless square. I think maybe that's the difference.

I kind of like the lack of little dotted protuberances (funny word) and top-loading disc drives. As for symmetry, how well does the NES or Genesis fit into that?

Isn't so much of Apple's design elegance based upon the premise that lagniappe design only creates a feeling of clutter?

As for the 360, I've never been a fan of its design (even though I love the controller). That didn't stop me from buying...three (?) of them.

The NES was simple. I don't know why it works, but I think that black band that runs down the right side is the key. I wouldn't call the first Genesis particularly attractive.

I'd say the 360s strength is that its unremarkable; However this only a strength because of the crime against humanity that was the original xbox. It does look like a bland PC, but this is better than the PSThree.

The Dreamcast always looked to me like a peripheral for some Sun Ultra workstation, which is rather OK.

I would say that is a very apt comparison.

I would also say I side with the first one easily.

If anyone cares, the slim PS3 drops support for 3rd party OS's like Linux.

You can probably come out ahead in that bargain, since you can market to that demographic of people who are obsessed with hardware-based PS2 backwards compatibility. I think some of 'em still haven't gotten their hands on the fully BC PS3.

That's what I was thinking (or at least brake even on it), but ebay is showing anywhere from $200-$500 range on these things. And quite a few are going for under $300.

Why not? I've owned them all, therefore I have a greater sample to offer opinions on.

Each opinion just depends on what month it is.

While I'm still bummed out at the loss of PS2 BC, those games are pushing 3+ years old, with new PS2 games getting rarer and rarer. Linux support? Who cares.

It's smaller, lighter, quieter and eats less power. I do miss the glossy black and chrome finish but for something smaller and cheaper this is also not a huge deal. I know I'll be picking one up.

Yep. I actually expected that, because the PLAYSTATION3 branding was not all that recognizable and all their other Playstation products use a variant of this logo (see PSP, PSone, both PS2s).

On the redesign: You're right, looks aren't the main priority. The finish looks cheaper, but they already took out most of the features the slim lacks (4 USB ports, B/C, card readers). The loss of ethernet and Linux booting probably won't matter to 99.9% of people, and those that do want/need it will just the old version. Much like when the PS2 slim came out and didn't work with the FFXI hard drive. But you know, overall, it's a step in the right direction. Smaller, more power efficient. The only real cons are the cheaper fit & finish; the plastic is much cheaper looking, and the buttons seem to be physical instead of touch-sensitive.

As for the issue on the poll, and people predicting it to do better: IMO, everyone probably owns the other 2 consoles at this point, so the PS3 has nowhere to go but UP in sales.

I think you have to consider that we're a bit of a vocal minority, partly because we game more, partly because we have the more social platform. Also, even if people aren't using their Wii at all (or maybe just their kids), they still have one.

Wednesday Morning News (Might as well get this out of the way Edition)

Sony looking to fill their $399.99 price point

Fable III Coming...
...in 2010 (Yeah, right)

Game takes place about 50 years after the first. You play as the child of the hero. Bowerstone has continued moving on and has become quite industrial. The game is not just about Albion this time.

Fable II Coming...
...in episodic form, allowing MS to rip off players in a new way.

I'm currently playing through Fable II right now, and I must say that it feels like one of the most generic RPGs I've played in a while. The story is quite lacking, which is typically the strong point of those types of games. Unless it really picks up during the third act or so, I doubt I'll be picking up Fable III.

In other PS3 news, this is retarded:
The PS3 Slim Has An Adorable Little Kickstand - PS3 Slim - Kotaku

I remember they sold those things when the PS2 debuted. I also remembered my PS2 standing on its side without the stand just fine. I have a feeling the PS3 slim will be fine without this as well...

All glory to the hypnotoad.

That looks atrocious. I'm sure it will sell 3,000,000+.

My duty...from the Kotaku 360 liveblog:

10:47 McWhertor: Sounds like we're about to wrap up here. This was all about Lionhead and Fable III, it seems.
10:47 McWhertor: No one really knows what to do.
10:48 McWhertor: Is it over? We're all awkwardly sitting here, looking around, waiting for someone to say "Oh, that's it."
10:48 crecente: There's a chance people will remain seated here waiting for more news for a good hour.
10:48 McWhertor: People are starting to realize, "Yes, that's it."
10:48 Luke Plunkett: no Crackdown 2?
10:48 McWhertor: So.... goodbye?
10:48 McWhertor: Sorry Luke, no Crackdown 2.
Would this typically be considered underwhelming for this sort of event, or is it just a result of Sony choosing an atypical location for this big of an announcement? Was it atypical at all? Is 360 on its heels, or are they going to be shrugging the PS3 Slim off?

A price drop of their own. Even $50 would keep it cheaper than the PS3 Slim. They're heading into another holiday season. One more year of outselling the PS3 would solidify their position. They're still (kinda/sorta) within striking distance for Sony.

I think you're speaking from your own personal hopes than good sense. MS has (surprisingly) been at the forefront of price drops this generation. Even after this aggressive move by Sony their cheapest console is still $100 cheaper than Sony's low-end model. Their biggest problem is a lack of real exclusives this year (Last year was killer).

The XBox 360 Arcade is not an option (for people like myself). I'm not sure how many people snatch one up, but if you have any plans on upgrading to a hard drive, wireless controller, component cables, and headset that are included with the Pro, then no thanks.

Microsoft, as Dakar stated, has been at the forefront of price drops this gen (kudos to them for that), but they have the funds to put their stamp firmly on this generation's hardcore audience for good, unless the whole Red Ring of Death has done more damage than we realize.

Personal hopes? Maybe. I just see more XBox Live accounts, more XBLA downloads, software galore, and more useless crap being sold as a result of more hardware in people's living rooms. With the Wii profitable from launch, the PS3 now profitable, and the 360 supposedly being profitable for a while now, why not push the hardware even harder?

I thought it was pretty much a given that the current "elite" 360 model's price was going to be cut to $300 in September? That's the rumor mill anyway.

I thought the rumor was also that the Arcade was gaining a hard drive?

And IIRC, the Arcade has a wireless controller, it was only the "Core" system that had a wired controller.

Sorry about the wireless controller misinformation on my part. Regardless, it's my humble opinion that the main draw for the 360 is XBox Live.

XBLA, Netflix Instant Play, the incredible integration with software, Gamerscores, and the sense of community and connectivity that is built-in is unrivaled. Without the hard drive, that advantage is pretty much dead. If XBox included a 60 GB hard drive with the Arcade, I'd consider it worth the money. Without it, I care nothing about the 360 Arcade, and even people like my extremely cash-conscious brother won't consider owning one. He bought his Pro about a year ago, along with my brother-in-law.

I can't sleep, and I got a little bored...

I took the standard 360 Arcade and added up the price to what would stand up feature-for-feature with the PS3 (from Amazon):

1. XBox 360 Arcade - $179.99
2. 120 GB hard drive - $119.97
3. 13 months of XBox Live - $49.99 (never mind that I'm only including one year in this)
4. Play & Charge kit - $17.99
5. Let's tack on an extra $20 for what it might cost you to find a cheap wireless Internet solution for your 360

Total - $387.94
PS3 (Slim) - $299

I didn't include Blu-ray support, since there's no available solution on Microsoft's end. Sure the Arcade only costs $179.99 without the bells and whistles, but I'm considering the fact that people, if given the choice, would rather not deal with AA batteries or Ethernet cables. I'm also assuming that if they're getting one of the "hardcore" machines, they're going to want to jump online for the full experience.

Even if you scale things back from the 120GB hard drive to the 60GB, it still weighs in at $328.46

Let's think about the 360 Pro...

1. XBox 360 Pro - $299.99
2. 13 months of XBox Live - $49.99 (never mind that I'm only including one year in this)
3. Play & Charge kit - $17.99
4. Wireless solution- $20

XBox 360 Pro set-up - $387.97

Recap: 60GB less than the PS3, unable to play Blu-ray, a hassle (albeit minor) to set up wireless, yearly charges for a Live subscription, and the probability of shipping the console off once, twice, or more times to get it resurrected after an appointment with the Red Ring of Death™. They do throw in a headset into the Pro model, so I guess I should mention that, although at $30, Sony's PS3 Bluetooth headset still puts the PS3 at just $330.

Tell me...where, to a buyer who doesn't currently own either console, is the 360's value over the PS3 (hardware wise)?

To someone from the outside, I would imagine they'd see 60GB of extra space to put media on, no yearly $50 membership fees to play people online, and a built-in wireless solution (let's face it - most would buy the 360's adapter instead of going the cheaper route, spending $72.97 more in the process).

Software is almost a moot point, since so many titles are cross-platform, and each system has its own share of impressive exclusives.

I'm more than willing to accept a few swift punches to the kisser to show me what I'm missing in this comparison. Help me understand this. Is XBox Live really worth roughly $200-250 more over the life of the console? Are the quality exclusives on the 360 actually better or more plentiful than the PS3's?

To someone who doesn't own either system yet, which console appears to be a better overall product for the money, the games, and/or the extra appeal?

[EDIT] - Keep in mind that this is all done under the impression that almost no one buys a console these days without any intention of taking it online and benefiting from the software updates, online multiplayer, and overall online experience. This is why I kept adding to the hardware of the 360 Arcade. It's not a full current-gen experience as is.

And at this point I think it's more about what console your friends own than what the current hardware lineup is.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

It's not even that. He's comparing the price of console he'd like to buy to the price of one he already has but with a price drop that didn't exist when he purchased it. When you're buying a second console its always going to look poorer in relation to the first just because of features duplicated. Its value needs to be measured outside of the numbers.

That's what I did for myself and a PS3 and it came up short. Now if Jawbone has no interest in streaming Netflix easily, other added NXE features, most of the 360 exclusives, or playing with the NN 360 community, then he shouldn't buy the 360. His cost comparisons are misguided (120 vs. 180 GB – are you really going fill either one of these up?; Live Gold – If you're coming to the 360 to play with us then accept that we all do this too). The icing on the cake is he's wasted far more money buying and selling these systems before. Now is the time to suddenly become price conscious?
