My iBook's display brightness slider is gone from system preferences! Just in the last few hours I lost my ability to adjust the brightness with the fn keys too.

What happened? I'm totally confused and have rebooted, repaired permissions, what should I do next?

I have an iBook g4 running OSX 10.4.5

Reboot the computer, press and hold Apple+Option+P+R as soon as you hear the optical drive buzz. Keep holding it until the iBook chimes *twice*.

Let go.

This is called "resetting the PRAM", and it might solve your problem.

Thanks for the tip, I just tried it and it didn't fix the problem.

I also noticed that I don't have any other resolutions to change to, it's just stuck in 1024x768. No other options. Very odd stuff!

I had a sort of a similar problem couple weeks back. Try intstalling 10.4.5 Combined Update again. That should solve it. It has something to do with replacing some corrupted files that adjust those system prefrences.

Well, I tried that too and it didn't work. I did the update again and also reset the PRAM.

Anything else my friends?

Shut off the ibook then start it back up with the mac osx dvd in the drive, then when the ibook is booting hold down the apple+C keys and it will boot into the mac osx OS. Then follow the instructions and see if that fixes your problem.
