Sometimes I'll watch a .mov or mpeg in the browser. I am sure there must be a way to view it independently of the browser (i.e. offline) using just quicktime.

I have looked in the library/cache and library/preferences but cannot find the file...

Really frustrating

Anyone know where these cached files are kept?

thanks!

assuming your UID is 501: cd /tmp/501/TemporaryItems && ls -al
look for something like QTPluginTemp4029417
then copy it to your desktop: cp QTPluginTemp4029417 ~/desktop/movie_name.mov

check your UID via NetInfo Manager, if you're not sure. as a rule, if you're the only user setup on that Mac, you'll be 501

If you have 'LaunchItemsX' and have 'Invisibles
on' in the prefs - you can CM your way :
Macintosh HD/private/tmp/501/temporaryitems/
- and there should be your
QTPluginTemp file.

Drag to desktop, rename '.mov' or whatever ;)

Not 100% fool proof, but does work about 50%
of the time.

I haven't ever looked in the cache before, but you can usually just grab the embedded movie with wget or curl, and do a strings on it in the terminal and get the real movie URL, then just download it. I have done this many times and it has always worked.

thanks for the responses guys. Unfortunatley, I am user 502, so cannot use most of these methods and wget and curl make no sense to me!

In laymans terms.....there must be an easier way

All you need is the Find tool in the Finder! Given that Quicktime files are relatively large, its made more simple. Heres what you do:

Find the files that have been modified today on your local disks and that are invisible. Select the Size column in the results window, so that larger files are toward the top.

What you should find on top, or near, is a QTPluginTempXXXXXXX file, where the X is some random number. If the QTPluginTemp file is done, copy to desktop and give it a .mov extension.

For future reference, create an alias of the parent folder TemporaryItems, so you dont have to do the search again.

regards,
MAJ

So change "501" to "502" in his example!

OK - found a new way.

But thanks to everyone for the suggestion.

This is what I did. View source of the page where the video is. Fiind the location (URL) of the wanted file in the html. paste this url into a new window.

then browse users/library/preferences/explorer/temporary files.

there it is!

a bit easier me thinks
