Power Mac G5 single 1.8 GHz
512MB
160 GB hard drive
SuperDrive
GeForce FX 5200

$1899 (NEW, NOT refurb.)

That's only $100 more than the G5 1.6, for a faster CPU, faster bus, and 80 GB more hard drive space. Also, while it's not mentioned, I think it probably has PCI-X and 8 memory slots, too, because those I believe are the specs of the usual $2099 single 1.8. This sale is the $2099 machine, but with a $200 discount.

At the US Apple Store in the Special Deals section. (Look for the link on the left side of the Apple Store front page, near the bottom.)

Incidentally, this price is $500 less than the price at which the single 1.8 debuted.

Power Mac G5
Sale Price is $1,899. (Savings applied at Check Out)
These products are new and unopened units.

Edit: Eug beat me to it...

It's in the Special Deals section. It's a brand-new machine with the following specs (anyway, this suggests that it's leftover stock of the rev A single-processor 1.8 Ghz G5 that was no longer carried in the main store when the dual 1.8 Ghz G5 was introduced)

1.8GHz PowerPC G5
* 512K L2 cache
* 512MB DDR400 128-bit SDRAM
* Expandable to 8GB SDRAM
* 160GB Serial ATA
* SuperDrive
* Three PCI-X Slots
* NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
* 64MB DDR video memory
* 56K internal modem

It's a much better deal than the $1799 1.6 Ghz G5.

Hmmm... This would be really good for the Canadians, but unfortunately the Canadians don't have access to this deal.

Single 1.8: CAD$2538 (US$1899)
Single 1.6: CAD$2499 (US$1870) - and the single 1.6 is crippled compared to the single 1.8.

Well, I just got a brand new 1800 single from an online store called CTI for $1740 with no sales tax and free shipping. They were nice enough to throw in a copy of Panther and iLife4 to boot.
These are really nice machines and for $1700 to $1800 a real deal.

Do you have a link to CTI? When I did a Google search for it, I came up with nothing.

It's only SPAM if they started the topic under the guise of some misleading header. But if its an answer to someones question, its not SPAM.

Sorry if someone thought I was shilling for CTI. I'm not. When I called them the said they only had 20 in stock so they might all be gone. I initially ordered one from CDW, and they had run out of stock. So I went with the other company. I'm just glad to have a G5 and wanted to note that there were some othet deals out there better than the one at the Apple Store. I know it's getting so you have to take everything that anyone posts with a grain of salt. Anyway, I hope some more Mac-heads get great deals on G5s from where ever they want to.

I didn't expect to get either Panther or iLife with my G5. When I got the box I was a little concerned because the box was all beat up (it came inside a bigger brown cardboard box) and the tape had been cut and re-taped. When I opened up the G5 box, the Panther upgrade and iLife disks were there, slipped in between the flaps. I already had both but now I have licenses for both my G5 and G3!

I bought a refurb PowerBook G4 from an on-line seller this summer. It came with very old version sof OS 10.2 and "iLife" apps (actually pre-iLife packaging). When I called Apple, the rep stated that every re-seller was supposed to include updated software with the Macs they sold. Now that did not mean the software had to be installed, but Updater CDs needed to be included with the shipment somewhere.

If the re-seller does not include the software in the original shipment, Apple suggest that customers contact the re-seller. I resolved my issue by contacting the re-seller who sent me new CDs via overnight shippingat no additional cost.

$1740 for a G5 is such a steal, that I want to buy one. However, I am spoiled by the flexibility of dual processors and cannot go back. I will just have to wait and see what comes around the proverbial bend.

Just ignore him. He's a fool for thinking his shilling for a political canidate is different than you trying to help some fellow Mac users in on a good deal.

They advertise themselves as Official Apple Resellers. Can you contact Apple and verify that? I think they have some tight control over who can become an Official Reseller.

Yeah, but the 1.8 dualie is $700 more expensive than the 1.8 single. Maybe we should compare the 1.8 single G5 to the 1.4 dual G4. Which is faster? Which has more potential to keep up in the future? I don't know the answers, I'm just asking.

..i'd bite the bullet , get a loan , anything and get a dual 1.8

..the dual g4 is ok , but it's noisy and limited by it's archaic motherbored , the single 1.8 is pointless as os-x is so brilliant with dual processors , and the dual 2.0 is overpriced for very meagre performance gains

..or wait a few weeks , by mid april they might have changed the whole playing field , who knows ??

That's what I've been doing. My Quicksilver (single CPU) G4 is chugging along for now. It's a little slugish, but I hope to get a dual G5 in a few months. I also want that 23" Cinema Display HD. That looks sweet. I hope we can get an 80gig video iPod soon too.

So, how much faster is the dual version of the 1.8 compared to the single?

I received my refurb 1.8 gig G5 yesterday and set it up last night. All the specs are as you would find in a normal purchase of the same machine at regular terms. It just has a new part number to reflect that it is a refurbished item. It came with Panther and iLife 04, though we could not register iLife because we couldn't seem to find the marketing parts number that they refer to. There are a lot of other numbers but not one that begins with an "M".

Otherwise, setup and updateing went without a hitch.

The trouble started later on when all of a sudden our internet connection wouldn't work. We have cable service through Comcast and have the line going into a hub into which we hook up Airport for a laptop and hardwire for the G5. I called Comcast this morning and they reported no service problems in our area so I disconnected the hub and hardwired the modem directly to the computer and now it seems to work OK. When looking at the IP details prior to unplugging the hub and Airport it was showing a router based IP address, rather than the ISP issued one, indicating that we were going throuh a router, which we were not. I will have to revisit the whole issue of setting up Airport and see what the trouble is. If anyone there has any ideas I would appreciate hearing.
