Marnie,
I recommend that you get familiar with eDonkey/mldonkey. That has been the best for me, I found many tv shows etc, and though it takes geting used to, it has proven to be the best by far.
After updating to 10.2, I couldn't get it to work, but I found help on this page:

Just wanted to add my thoughts on this one.
I have a G4 cube running OSX and a PC running XP that I built and have used a few of the programs that have been mentioned on both.
Some time ago Hotline was the app that we all used until it went to windows at which time it quickly became bastardized with nothing but what seemed like porn and constant hoop jumping to get no where. My definaition of hoop jumping is what I call it when you'd go to a site, they tell you what to do to get access, you give away your email or something silly, click half a dozen links and get nothing but all the spam. I'm sure there are those that are familiar with what I am talking about.
Carracho was to save all that but is now quickly becoming the same as many sights only allow access if you happen to have something that they want that is not yet available or simply unfeasible to give. Do you know how long it would take me to upload a 700MB file using my capped 128k upload speed thru COX? More time than I care to invest. I like carracho but it is certainly not the best out there.
Limewire is mixed. For some it works wonders and for others like me it just doesn't impress. gnutella for windows always seemed to work better IMO.
eDonkey is another mixed one. Not sure why they pulled the OSX version although it would be nice to have. Problem with eDonkey seems to be getting connected. I've had no luck over the last few days with it and I just don't believe that I should have to go thru a bunch of tricks to get something to work that simply just should.
Kazaalite for the pc is the best that I have found so far for either platform. It always has 2 million or so users on line 90% or more of the time. It has everything you could be looking for and we all know what I mean by that. Speed is great with broadband with faster downloads with files being shared by more users. Easy to connect and use. Does not crash for no reason like Hotline used to or Limewire.
Neo has not impressed and there is definately a need for a stronger kazaa client. On this I think most can agree.
Not saying I'm right on every point but wanted to share my experiences.

Be sure to open TCP port 4662 and UDP port 4666 in your firewall. And remember that, if you're using CocoDonkey, you need to specify the location of the "mldonkey-distrib" folder for the daemon to launch.
If you continue to have problems, try running the client in the terminal. Navigate to the mldonkey directory:
cd /Applications/mldonkey-distrib(for example)
Then launch the executable
./mldonkey
You can then use your web browser to interface with the client, found at localhost:4000.
It sounds like more work than it is, really. I get excellent speeds on my DSL (swarm downloading, like the FastTrack clients), and it does a great job of keeping track of which file is which, regardless of what people have named them. Just remember that the network is geared towards large multimedia files (i.e. movies), so you're unlikely to find much in the way of .mp3s or [gasp] warez.

I think the corrrect port is 4080, not, 4000.
I use both Cocodonkey and a browser at times, connecting to 127.0.0.1:4080.
Marnie, if you get that message, that means that mldonkey isn't started. iSore gave some good instructions, so try those. The most common problem I have come across is not setting the location of the mldonkey folder in the Cocodoney preferences. If Cocodonkey doesn't know where to find mldonkey, it can't start it.
Let me know how you do.

ok, i got hings running, did a search, came up with some responses and quickly my entire network lost internet connection. i'll continue playing around and trying various settings etc but I feel like this is a lot of work just to see if there's a mac alternative for something working just fine on windows. I guess that's my point, I'm not looking so much for an alternative as I am looking for access to something that already has millions of users.

Just wanted to throw in my $0.02...
Kazaa Lite is very nice on a PC (Wonderful selection), but lately there have been a lot of fake files as media companies have gotten hip to the fact that lots of people are using it.
Kazaa (Regular) BLOWS because of the huge amount of spyware/adware that's installed along with it. I wouldn't install an authorized Kazaa program on my mac if you paid me.
Lawsuits are starting to pop up against Kazaa users who share hundreds of files. It may seem free, but it's actually being monitored and policed. Please be careful if you choose to use the Fast Track network.
Try out usenet groups sometime as an alternative. You'll need access to a decent news server and you can't search...but the selection can be pretty good (sometimes better) than the P2P networks and they don't seem to be as much of a target at the moment.

I can search Usenet newsgroups from google.com, or from within Thoth (my preferred OS X newsreader).

I think the main reason some servers ask you to upload something is that virtually guarantees the person upping an app doesn't work for the FBI or a software company IMO.

It's true, the quality isn't great...if you have to see the movies at full screen mode. If you can stand to watch them at a lower resolution, they're fine.
They have pretty much all the new releases and the files are small enough that you can download them very quickly. Most of the new movies these days are crap anyway, so I don't want to waste alot of time downloading them and I don't keep them. For the good ones, like The Godfather, I use iMesh to get full DVD rips that are excellent quality and save them on a firewire harddrive.
I couldn't get mlDonkey to work either.

Direct Connect has been working well for me, took me a bit to figure it out though.
It is no good for software(it is mainly windows), but a lot of music and movies.
Limewire is great if you want the latest music, but for older music or foreign (non-USA) music it just hasn't been very useful. DVD rips have been a no-go for me on limewire.
