I have a brand new iMac, and am connected to the interet via GTE DSL. I need to know if I can use the FAXstf that came bundled with my iMac on the DSL line, or do I have to connect with th 56K internal modem, which would entail paying for another phone line, as well as a monthly fee.

I don't think you could use FAXstf through the ethernet connection DSL uses because the receiving fax machine would be on a phone line and the phone number would have to be dialed somehow.
I use my modem on my iMac which is connected to the jack for my phone line with no problem or extra monthly charges.

You should be able to use your iMac's internal modem, connected to your voice phone line, to fax from FaxSTF. I'm able to do that with this G3, which is connected to the 'net via DSL and the telco via it's modem.
Just run a phone line from the iMac's 56K modem jack to your voice phone jack.
