problems running ut server mac to pc BUT not pc to mac

my puter = g4 400 yikes 640MB ram rage128 10/100bT
other puter = pent 233 16MByte 3d vid card 160MB ram 10/100bT
connected via crosspatch ethernet cable
if i try to run a lan server on my mac , my friend can see it in the ut lan games list , he can try to connect
it downloads any mods / maps i have for that game that he doesnt then it stops and says something like <incompatible "DE" file yada yada > (i cant remember the exact words) but it means i cant serve for him to get on my ut game
however if he serves i cant see him in the lan servers list but i can connect by "opening a location" ie the local ip i set in his puter 192.168.1.10 this works fine and we can play .... but he has to serve the game for me to connect (my mac's ip was set to 192.168.1.3)
can anyone help
has anyone come across this error
i suspect its some sort of umod or what ever that i may have loaded
is there something i have to uninstall or delete in UT?
why can i connect to him
but he cant connect to me?
please help
