If you think that's bad, I once heard a computer newb say "Does the Macintosh have Windows?"

I told her it doesn't so much have Windows as it is Windows... or at least what Windows trying to be...

Back when i worked at circuit city we had a woman say she needed a new coffee cup holder for her pc because hers had stopped working.

We had no idea what she was talking about. Then she described how it used to retract in and out when she wanted to use it.

This can't be that uncommon as years ago I read a thing about idiotic support calls and this was one of them.

Ha! That was funny. I felt like I was looking in a mirror from a mirror. But, jeez, are these people computer illiterate or what? How do I tell if my USB is firewire enabled? That was funny. The thing is, the iPod is so simple they are just confused that anything can work and be so hassle free. Welcome to the world of the Mac. Enjoy your stay... and pick up a real computer while you're at it.

Very true.

I am a switcher.

And I am a Computer Scientist.

Every day, I am amazed at how things just work with OS X.

Sometimes, I catch myself trying to make things harder than they really are:

Like "how in the heck do I connect to a shared USB printer in 10.2???"

5 minutes later, I laughed at myself when I discovered "it just works". The printer is there. Print to it! Amazing.

Windows users are so trained to fight their computers to do simple tasks.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

just because you have never answered tech support phone calls.
i've talked to some of the most stupid people.
i had a guy tell me hackers would hack into his pc to check if he had porn then if he did they would talk to him.

Another caller swore the FBI was onto him for"hackers" putting child porn on his computer.

or then you just get the dumb people... the people that i would have to explain for 10 minutes how to empty the trash on their mac.

Ever hear about the foreign guy who didn't know what a paper clip was. The phone support tech tried to explain how to eject a floppy that was stuck. He kept saying "it didn't come with that". It took the tech a while to figure out that the guy didn't know what one was (kind of a who's on first).

A friend of mine had a bunch of Apple support calls (MP3) that were hilarious.

I need to ask if he still has those. (or if anybody knows where to find those...)

LOL...I just had to do that the other day at the lab.

*Trash window open*

How do I get rid of this file? (The file is already in the trash)

*They close the trash window*

"You go to Finder => Empty Trash."

*They try clicking on the Finder icon*

"No, the Finder menu."

*They go through the File menu, then start browsing through the menus one by one.*

"Tell you what, right click over the trash can."

*They left click the icon, the window opens, and they try to click on the trash icon in the status bar*

"No, the trash icon in the Dock. Right click on it.

"Empty trash?"

"YES!"

"Mac is soooo complicated. I like my IBM at home better."

Edit: blah

Funny you mention that. Last night I was setting up a Windows pc for a friend and all I tried to do was install a USB printer. I downloaded the driver and double clicked the installer.

First, tells me it can't find the USB port. Plug and unplug printer about 50 times until it detects it.

Then, it tells me to insert a floppy disk. That's right, it extracts the drivers onto a floppy disk then installs from there!

Next, a reboot. Windows detects printer. You have to insert the Windows CD. It installs something. Another reboot.

Finally the printer works. Sheesh!

Yup... I had to install a Linksys PCI wireless card in my PC earlier. It obviously came with a CD with the drivers on it. I put the card in the PCI slot and then turn it on. Put in the CD to install the drivers and it then installs something off the CD and then asks for the Windows CD, which I have to go find in my pile of Windows crap. Finally it installs some more files from the Windows CD, restarts, and then acts as if I never installed drivers for it in the first place. Had to repeat this process 3 times to get it to work.

You guys have it all wrong, PC are much easier than macs. These are all just lies the Mac people spread to make people buy macs.

ps. This is just a joke. I have been amazed at how easy Macs are compared to Windows. However, when I mention that, I get a message like the one above from a windows user.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

PC's are always about 2-4 years behind Macs on technology, so your system probably doesn't come with it.
really? all i read here says "macs are always 2-4 years behind pcs" nice to see things from the other side of the fence every once in a while. puts some things in perspective.

it's true. my boss refers to herself as a "dell girl" or something. For some odd reason, though, she has the only PC on the floor. I've never seen so many pismos just like mine! maybe all you need to have loyalty to your things is to be the only person you know that has one...

And for irony I had no problem with the Linksys Wireless setup, but had to install Jaguar 3 times figuring out how Classic works with 10.2. My fault for going for a clean install, but it's all good now. I guess it depends on how you think about computing, using a Windows machine with a Mac mindset(or the other way around) can be cause for some problems.

At least PC users can problem solve/troubleshoot, and don't just sit there and go "duh" if something happens to go wrong. Sure macs may make things simpler, but sometimes advanced options are needed, and should be easily accessable.

Damn amateurs! :)

See, the trick to get around that BS, is to copy the win directory from the CD onto your hard drive. For example, with Windows 98, you copy the "win98" directory from the CD onto your hard drive. Then whenever windows wants crap, you just point it to that directory rather than having to go find your CD. Plus it's a million times faster to read from the HD.

Luckily this seems to be a thing of the past. XP never does it, and if I remember correctly, 2000 never did either.

Sounds like a problem with your setup. That has never happened to me with either office 97 or 2000, barring the first run. Not that I'm not saying Windows is stupid.

But what if the challenge was life-threatening?

Like you're on a spaceship powered by Windoze 2045 and the spaceship decides to plot a collision course into a nearby star...and you've got exactly 2 hours to fix the problem? Would you enjoy the challenge then?

After escaping near death, would you be like "Thanks Microsoft...that was a real challenge"?

well.... I'd sure like the challenge alot more if it saved me! Windows isnt >that< bad, it really isnt. I always figure out my problems (which are few) shortly after I encounter them, and on my own of course. There are computer illiterate people on every platform. Sure, make fun of Dell and its buyers but wait until next quarter, 'uh, Mr. Job, we did not make our quarterly projected earnings because we had counted Dell to move x # of iPods. However, Dell buyers (Joe and Jane Average) were not sophisticated to use them and our buyers (Mac users) just made fun of them instead of helping them''.

I'm sure it was a problem with Windows, not how I installed Office. Because I knew other people in my office that had the exact same problem. Some days it would come up, other days Outlook (or other Office components) would launch fine. No changes to my computer, mind you. Just another work day, another Windows headache

Don't forget the ever-important quote from a switch ad, "I used to think it was my fault Windows didn't work right"

You don't even need to copy the windows cd to the hard drive if your trying to save disk space, if an installer ever asks for the window cd you can usually appease it by pointing the installer to the \windows\system32 folder.

If that doesn't work try pointing it at \windows or \windows\system

Hope that helps someone, but I personally left the windows world behind when I bought my new powerbook 2 months ago.

I love every aspect of the mac. I love the OS, I love the design aesthetics, I love the community feeling.

Long live the mac.
