Pioneer uses IP-Bus for head unit accessories (CD Changer, Aux In, XM Tuner). This head didn't have Aux In on the back, so I had to get the module you see under the head. I kinda like it being separate, though. When I get my new car it allows me to place it somewhere more convenient behind the dash, then I can run patch cables up into the cab.

It's a 1/8" Stereo to Dual RCA cable. the 1/8" connector goes into the Line Out of the Dock, and the RCA connectors go into the Aux In on the adapter under the head unit.

Awesome mod, PCTek, although I fear that 3rd party accessory makers will come up with something more aesthetically pleasing. How stable is the iPod in the Dock on the road, say when you hit a speedbump?

Nice work.

One note: I'd be concerned that the iPod's display is too bright at night where it's mounted.

I have the iPod's Backlight timer set to 2 seconds, so it goes off almost right after I touch it.

Very stable. It's almost locked in place. At a local Apple Store, When I picked up a display iPod in a Dock, the Dock came with the iPod, I had to physically separate them for the iPod to come out of the Dock.

ok, i didn't know.. i have the same ipod, the same car, i need to build a holder for my ipod, but i can't decide where. how about the sunglass holder overhead.
i would be nice if there was some kind of interface which would send artist and title to the head unit like the cd-changer does..

i guess it is a '93 voyager?
i am currently thinking of putting the connectors into the piece where it reads "front wheel drive" as there is nothing behind this piece of plastic...

Close, it's a '91 Caravan.

motti: I, too, have taken apart the "Front Wheel Drive" bezel. I've pondered putting something in there, possibly RCA connectors patched from my Aux-In box, but then i'm screwed if I sell the car...

metal angle brackets.

I think a more tasteful way of doing this would have been mounting it off the seam between black and beige in the console.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Oooh, those shiny angle brackets!

I've got a Pioneer too, but I left the adapter behind the dash and soldered short RCA cables to an 1/8" headphone jack which is discreetly mounted in the pocket underneath the head unit (the factory stereo it replaced was a double-DIN).

The iPod I set on a sock in one of the cup holders. I'd be too paranoid about car vibrations snapping the hot-glued bare-metal-to-dash connection over time.

Matt, are you sure hot-melt glue is the right adhesive for inside a car?!? It can reach 160?F inside a car in the worst of summer (that is, assuming we ever GET a summer here in MD!), and I'd be worried that the heat would soften the glue enough that the bracket falls off.

As for modding the interior paneling... honestly, how much is a 91 Dodge gonna go for by the time you get to selling it? My guess is that $5 off of the $500 you'll get for it when it dies are probably not gonna be too huge a concern! Of course, you could always buy a spare panel from a junkyard, and keep it in the garage till you're ready to sell.

Or the buyer may even find a use for extra audio inputs!

My 12v outlet stays on power even with the keys removed -- I couldn't leave my Belkin perma-plugged like that.

I can sleep easier now seeing that the dock brackets are screwed in place!

If your good with wiring or know someone they can run a wire to the fuse block that only turn on the cig lighter only when the ignition is turned on...it's not very hard to do.

*clap clap clap* Well that looks very very nice.

Do you just not have the power plugged in in the photos, or did you rig some type of voodoo magic to power the iPod...?

I wish I was better with car stereo, I'd take my deck out in a flash and hook up a fat MP3 player to it. I currently have a pretty nice sound system with two MTX 12" subs and Cerwin-Vega speakers, I'd love to pick up an older iPod model (10 gigs should be enough) and do something like this to my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

There is a magnetic charging field 30cm around the car stereo. I can place the ipod everywhere and it simply charges
ok ok, the power cord is simply not attached.
