Is there a way to upgrade the ethernet on a CRT iMac?
I'd like to put a Gigabit card into a slot loading machine.
thoughts?

It can't be done. The ethernet on the iMac part of the motherboard and isn't a PCI card that can be removed.
I'm not sure why you want gigabit ethernet, since there aren't many times when you could take advantage of the extra speed. Fast ethernet (100 Mb/s) has a maximum theoretical speed of 12.5 MB/s (note this is megabytes, and not megabits.)
Anyway, I hope that was informative.

Tell you what though... Considering the lack of (ahem) momentem (Mhz/Ghz-wise) in Apple's Pro lineup, I wouldn't think twice about just flat out buying an gigabit-enabled iMac G4 (if there were such a thing) and using it for a webserver. Hell, they're powerful enough.

Beb, you would be buying a 15-inch flat panel for nothing.

why in the name of god do you think you need gigabit for a freeken web server?! I don't know ANYONE with a internet connection faster than 100mbit, do you? A DS3 line that costs THOUSANDS a month is "only" 45mbit!
Why would Apple want to put gigbit in a home computer?! Have you even seen the prices on a gig switch? Of all the things power user would like to see added to an imac, I think gig ethernet ranks below a built in beer cooler.

since so many people have asked "why would you want to..."
I'm considering installing gigabit network at my studio, and would want all workstations to access file sharing + databases able to connect at gigabit speed.
now you know
