I'm still looking for a good slide scanner to deal with boxes & boxes of old family slides.

Are there any flat-bed scanners with slide adapters that do a decent job? I looked at a HP Scanjet G4010 which seemed okay, but it didn't get very high ratings on any consumer sites.

For scanning slides, you don't want a flatbed scanner, you want a dedicated slide scanner. They are more expensive, but the quality of the scans is also a lot, lot better.

That would certainly be my preference, but none of the units I have actually seen are Mac-compatible, so I'm still looking, without much luck.

Huh?
Pretty much all of them are Mac compatible. For instance, Minolta (or this one if you want to save money), Nikon and Canon (although the latter has a SCSI interface). All of them are Mac compatible. Only companies like Plustec don't bother to make Mac drivers. But even then you could Silverfast which supports even Plustec scanners, for instance.

Where did you get that none of them are Mac compatible? Some salesman?

OP, it shouldn't be too hard to find a used, dedicated slide scanner, e.g. by Nikon.

Or use a slide adapter on a good digital camera.

I tried a slide adapter on my Canon SLR and it was rubbish. The only way is with a proper slide Scanner. From what I have seen the Nikon Slide scanner is the one to get. Expensive though.

Good Luck

On an SLR, you probably need a macro lens to use a slide adapter. On a compact, you shouldn't.
