why is RAM for old macs so expensive???

I just priced some memory for my sister's PM6500. 
crucial&memoryx want $142 for a measily 64 MB DIMM.... I just paid $91 for 256 MB for my iMac!
and 64 is as high as they make for that model, apparently. So it doesn't make all that much sense to upgrade... she has 32+16=48 now, so would 32+64 be that much better.
grrr.
anybody found any better deals, and can the PM 6500 actually handle more than the specs say?

Plentiful supply = lower prices.
Low supply = higher prices.
There simply aren't as many of the older DIMMs in the pipeline because there's less incentive to produce them in substantial quantities. It's not as if they're selling the same quantity as PC100's at those prices.

Yep, those motherboards will only support 64M DIMMs.
But I get almost as much use out of my 5400 as I do my iMac, mainly because of all the stuff the 5400 will do that the iMac won't. At 200Mhz, it's a pretty snappy machine. Has video out, video in, a TV tuner, SCSI onboard, serial ports (2 of them!) and an ADB port built in. Plus, a remote control.
Edit: I left out the onboard ethernet and the open PCI slot (7").
Depends on what you want to do with the machine, I guess.

6500 Ram is EDO or something like that, EDO stuff is generally expensive, from what i've heard....

The 5400/5500/6400/6500 use 2k buffers, and the early machines will use FPM and not need EDO. But the stuff at coastmemory.com for $59 is 4k -- it works in 7200s and other powermacs.
It's a common mistake, just be sure you don't buy the 4k (it'll show up as 32M if it's 64M, or half).
