When I shut my powerbook and it goes into sleep mode, is it safe to pack it away in my laptop case?
Or is it still to risky to cover up the air vents in case of overheating?
Cheers!

When I have classes my PowerBook always travels with me in sleep mode, never had problems with a 12"(1.33Ghz) and its nearing 1yr mark... even the accident on the tram two months ago didn't harm it, yet I suffered a mild concussion from the bag holding my PB hit me in the back of the head when I fell face first!

When it's sleeping it's as mobile as when it's off, don't worry about it

I let my PB sleep for a 10 hour road trip to Denver. I placed it in a MacCase sleeve, then put it in my suitcase and not a single problem arised.

I do it. As a precaution I disabled lidwake, meaning the machine will not wake when you open the lid/screen. Just to be safe, should something press against the lid button.
in the terminal type: sudo pmset -a lidwake 0
"sudo" because pmset must be run as root,
"-a" for "all", meaning both when running on battery and when plugged in,
and
"lidwake 0" turns the automatic waking off ("lidwake 1" would turn it back on)
Maybe you want to apply this as well. Works like a charm for me.
