I got a new 20" iMac yesterday. Specs are 2.16Ghz, 1 gig RAM, 128 meg video memory. I transferred all my settings and data from my mini using the mini in target disk mode with the firewire connection. I've had to reinstall a couple of drivers but other than that everything seems to have transferred fine. However, the iMac seems sluggish at many tasks and is doing some quirky things. A good example is that right now, I just mapped a drive on my Windows PC and it mapped fine but the "Connecting to Server" status window is still up and won't go away. It also seems to be slow opening some apps, etc. Could transferring everything from my mini have caused this? Would it be better to just reinstall OSX clean and install everything from scratch?
I have 2 gigs of RAM on order so I know that will help but this seems like a bigger problem than just a lack of memory...
Thanks
Todd

Yes, transferring everything from the G4 mini can cause these slowdowns.
If you have ShapeShifter or anything else that requires Unsanity's APE, throw it away, in God's name, and your problems will go away.
Did you make sure that the drivers you re-installed were defiitely Intel-compatible and the latest versions off the manufacturers' websites?

It could be Spotlight that's indexing your hard drive for the first time. That would slow down your computer since it's constantly accessing the hard drive.

You used Migration Assistant. Bad idea. From PPC to Intel. Even worse idea.
Blow away the OS and start from scratch.
But I wouldn't use Finder's network performance as a benchmark for speed; it's always slow.

Ditto on this thought. I've seen this happen more than a few times... people were like, why the hell did I buy a new computer when it's so damn slow...
Spotlight needs about 45 minutes to an hour to index initially.
Beyond that, it might be some of the stuff from the G4... in which case you can do an archive and install.

Thanks to all. I think that I'm going to start over this afternoon, reinstall OSX clean then just transfer the stuff from my mini that I need. Thanks for the responses!

Using that migration tool in the beginning.. you could actually have it migrate everything but the network settings or users.. and it will at least still copy over apps, and files on "HD".
Or you can try to create a new user and see if that runs any faster.

Oh, and remember, if you reinstall and do the erase and install... you can gain a bit of performance and HD space by not installing all the printer drivers, languages, etc. just click on customize.

I erased and reinstalled yesterday and everything is running great now. I took a couple of hours to reinstall my apps so I'm in good shape now. Thanks to all for the help.

.
Transferring from g5 PPC to Intel will be my next upgrade.
Why is the migration assistant not good, and what would you propose instead?

Search the forums and Google in general... it just causes a lot of machines to be sluggish, even when not changing processor types.
Use TDM or a network to copy your home directory and applications.

Don't want to really re work my iTunes though.....I notice Safari hangs up big time when using Adium and/or my Torrent app......Really sucks.

Make sure you have the UPSTREAM bandwidth in whatever Peer-to-Peer apps limited to about 80% maximum of your total upstream bandwidth.
If the upstream is completely clogged through sharing, then the package transfer receipts from your machine only go through very slowly, meaning that websites/downloads you're requesting/transferring will hang frequently as they wait for your package receipts before continuing to send data.
This will slow your internet access to a crawl.
