Is there any free software available for the mac that can encrypt or password protect a file. Cheers.

Not easily, but you can put it on an encrypted volume using disk utility. Create a new image, and select encrypted.

If you are running Mac OS 10.4 Tiger, there is a widget, DashCrypt that lets you do that via drag&drop, it is also free, I was not able to find it @ Apple Site, maybe google can help you.
