So since the iPhone App Store has finally arrived we now have many apps for the iPhone and iPod touch to chose from.

Which app do you recommend every iPhone owner should get? Paste a screenshot, give a short description, and mention the price.

I'll start off with SplashID, $9.99.

You can use it to securely store passwords, CC numbers, login information, etc. At $9.99 it's not exactly cheap, but I will definitely need a little utility like this on my new iPhone.

I can't access the Appstore yet but before you purchase that app, I would advise you to look into 1Password for the iPhone. It won't be available right away but the (short) wait will be worth it.

Here's another one and this time it's free: Currency.

It converts over 50 currencies with up-to-date exchange rates.

There's an iTunes update.

Regardless, just go to the iTMS and search for an app by name. Select the app from the search results or just use one of the links I added above. In the path you'll then find "App Store" section. Click on it and you're there.

You don't even have to do that. Choose "Applications" from the sidebar and then click "Get More Applications" at the bottom. Takes you right to the app store.

But how can we recommend apps when we can't even use them yet???

Something else, you have to check Applications in iTunes prefs > General > Show. If it's not checked you won't see the Applications section in the sidebar.

This. I did download a dozen or so of the free ones to test when I can but I think the best is yet to come, along with the software update to use them.

Another free one that appears to be very interesting: Remote.

This one 's from Apple. Allows you to remote control music on your Mac, AppleTV, and AirTunes. Your can browse your library and view cover art too.

So I gotta ask, are you the developer of SplashID? Because this thread really looks like a clever advertisement...

I updated last night to 7.7 and the app store was down... BUT I used your suggestion above and searched for splashid and I was then able to view all apps! Thanks!

No. I'm not the developer behind Currency or Remote either. I'm just curious about good iPhone apps.

Bejeweled 2 (wife)
Blackjack 21
Box Office
Facebook (wife)
Google Mobile App
Mobile News Network
NY Times
Twitterific
Urban Spoon

Forgive me if this has been answered, but can a purchased app be shared among 2 iPhones on the same account? My wife and I will have a pair of phones, both syncing to the same iTunes account. I won't be needing to buy apps twice, right?

I'm thinking about loopt and whrrl. I wonder if either of these has yelp reviews integrated. Then again, I think I saw a Yelp app too (not sure if it had GPS capabilities though).

Negative to above besides stalking factor... I see on some other carriers, there is a monthly charge for loopt and whrrl (planning on charging <$4/month

I was really hoping for a last.fm app to be available on release. Pandora doesn't work outside the 'states.

Has anyone tried any of the iTrans, specifically the NYC app?

$14.99 isn't too bad for something I'd use a lot, but I'm not eager to spend $14.99 and have no idea what the app is like.

Has anyone been able to use the Facebook app yet?
After I enter my email address and password it comes back saying that it can't connect to Facebook and to try again later.

Busy downloading Super Monkey Ball.

So far I've downloaded a bunch of free apps & Super Monkey Ball.

AIM
eBay
Jott - voice recorder
SportsTap
Movies.app
iPhone Remote

There seems to be a bug with Movies.app. There's no way to exit the keyboard when you're done entering your zip code. I had to exit out by hitting the Home button and reopen the app. Luckily it saves your zip code.

Is there a unit converter like the one available in Dashboard for the iPhone? I searched the Apps store but didn't find anything.

Speaking of last.fm, it'd be nice if there were a last.fm app to live scrobble your iPod playing, rather than requiring a sync w/iTunes.

I'm really looking forward to try out google mobile — Lifehacker calls it the "Quicksilver for the iPhone".
Nicholas Jitkoff (developer of QS) was part of the project so might not be too far off.

There's not currently one, and I agree: I don't know if the API allows for it or not, or whether Apple will allow it to be provided by a 3rd party, or not.

I'm out of town and can't sync my iPhone, but I'd really like to look over the apps and mark the ones I want. Unfortunately, the App Store isn't letting me add them to my shopping cart; it just says "Buy Now." Is this true for everyone?

I've downloaded AIM, AOL Radio, CheckPlease, Facebook, MySpace Mobile, People, Remote, SportsTap, To Do, WeatherBug..

I've used AIM, Facebook, MySpace Mobile, SportsTap and WeatherBug. I can recommend all except MySpace Mobile, which is nearly (not quite) as crappy as their website. SportsTap was actually better in their web edition for iPhone (though it is still good), and Facebook/WeatherBug both hit grand slams.

Myspace crashed my iPhone and it restarted automatically. You're right though, it is much nicer than using the website.

What is AOL Radio about? Streaming radio stations? If so, do you know if it works over Edge?

Some of the stations work over EDGE, others do not. I'm sure this is probably a much better experience over WiFi or 3G.

Yes, it is streaming radio stations. Some of them won't work over EDGE and are grayed out. I'm not sure if those will play on iPhone 3G or not over EDGE. I'm assuming so.

Super Monkey Ball isn't easy, but you get used to it. I found that initially I tilted the screen far too much, but after a few minutes I got used to it and ended up playing while walking from work to my subway stop.

The Facebook app is really good and I like that you can chat to people using it.
Shazaam is neat. You point your iPhone towards music and it comes back with info on the song that's playing.

I haven't tried that- it does look nice but I'm waiting on "Tube" which should be out very soon. I had it on the Treo and have been waiting un-patiently for it to come on iPhone.
The developer informed me that it would be out on or right around launch.

http://www.visualit.co.uk/Apple/iphone.htm

"Band" is kickarse btw - really really fun and actually quite deep in options.
"Aim" doesn't work for me - must be cuz mobileme isn't really live yet.
"Monkey Ball" is great.
"Jott" is a great free app that transcodes your speach into notes - pretty cool.
"Facebook" is cool - but haven't dug too deep yet.
