i have a second gen ipod and never had a single problem with it. just recently this started to happen:

whenever i plug my ipod into my macbook pro it wont show up? it just keeps saying "dont disconnect" and thats it, nothing happens.

this is the first time any of this has ever happened. what do i do? whats going on? anyone?

Does it show up in the System Profiler (Apple menu --> About this Mac --> more information)?

does it make strange noises - clacking or somesuch?

Does it work normally when not connected to the computer?

Does Disk Utility see it?

most likely you should just format the entire drive and hope for the best

It's an older iPod, so the drive may be starting to go. You could try a Restore if you don't mind the drive being erased. FWIW, my refurb 4G wasn't mounting reliably and would freeze a lot, and someone suggested running Disk Warrior on it. It hasn't exhibited those symptoms since.
