Nah. You don't have to go up in outer space and run a whole bunch of blue people out of their tree to get at adamantium.

It looks pretty metal to me in the Engadget video, especially the lid looking like a brushed aluminum of sorts.

turtlehead trollhead.
imitch, you're right. Samsung said they were inspired by water and leaves. The way it looks when it's folded together does kinda look like a leaf. When I saw the screen, I was blown away. It's incredibly bright and vibrant. It is not plastic, either, nor does it look like plastic. The brushed composite aluminum looks more like metal than the MacBook Air.
This is just another example of many starting this year where the competition has really caught up to Apple. Apple's industrial design is no longer the only game in town.
I wish Apple would start doing more in terms of different designs. While they are good, we've had the same grey, sharp edged, alumitub portables for years. No change really at all.

Its like at the dinner table when two family members are fighting, and not addressing each other directly, so they make general statements toward others about their feelings for one another.

Looks like Samsung inflated the "sales" for the Galaxy Tab.
Samsung during the call for its fall quarter results admitted that its actual sales of the Galaxy Tab weren't nearly as strong as claimed. Although it had said it sold 1.5 million Galaxy Tabs in 2010 and two million by this month, company official Lee Young-hee when pressed said that these were only sales to carriers and retail stores, not real customers. She wouldn't say how many had shipped but was aware that it was "quite small" relative to the number reaching stores.

Lol. Microsoft did the same thing with Windows Phone 7. They held a press release about how many Windows Phone 7 phones they've sold... to retailers. They refuse to expound on how many actual customers have bought.

Wow, a really loser move Samsung. They happily threw around the 'sales' figures knowing they were being dishonest in the presentation.

Well, the 10.1" version is nearly here. The 'metal-looking bezel is in fact silvered plastic, and looks as tacky as the dime-store toy-tablets' we'll see everywhere soon. It got other rave reviews, such as - 'decent enough effort'
- 'Honeycomb feels like Linux on the desktop before Ubuntu'
- 'somebody made a toy plastic iPad'

Why does Samsung refuse to make the Galaxy product lines feel expensive? They've been able to make cheap featurephones feel very expensive feeling but yet the Galaxy S phones and Galaxy tablets feel iPhone 3G-cheap.

Apple's the only company I know of that mills cases out of blocks of aluminum and glass. It could be an expensive process to get into, and Samsung doesn't want to invest in it if they can go with carbon fiber or plastics for a lot less.

You don't have to mill out cases from aluminum to feel expensive, you just have to have a textured back such as every HTC phone has had for the past 6 years.

Doesn't Samsung make the screens that go into the iPad? I find it weird that they seem to have a problem competing cost-wise with a product they themselves make the most expensive component of.

No, LG, Innolux, TPK, and Wintek supply the iPad display. Samsung does provide the A4 chip though.

Weird, I'd say it has more of a Windows 7 look, especially with the bottom bar.

Samsung is fragmenting the not-iPad tablet market all by itself. Some sort of 8.9" version is coming soon.

Bought a Nook Color, rooted it, overclocked it to 1.1GHz, and it's been amazing. Can't see why a person would buy anything else, if they want a 7" wifi tablet.

I've been contemplating this, we need an Android device in the office. I'll probably be picking one up from ebay.

Why so rude?
Don't you remember the Samsung exec admitting that they'd lied?
Also, that article AGAIN talks about shipments, not sales, AFAICT, and does not take into account returns. Since it makes total sense to overship for Christmas, we'll see how it pans out.

I went and played with the iPad 2 today (since I don't have one yet). In all honesty the biggist size still feels a tad awkward, but it feels nicer than the original iPad, and it's a much smoother experience than the Tab in terms of the OS. Despite the likeable form factor, the Tab still just seems half-assed because of its OS.
Despite my complaints with the size though, it's reasonably decent, as it's already 132 ppi. I think that's one of the reasons it's the size that it is. It maintains that desired 1024x768 screen rez for surfing, but ups the ppi to reduce physical size. Increasing the ppi to say 150 ppi would introduce other issues.
P.S. At the same time, I tried a Viewsonic tablet (7"). After 1 minute I still couldn't figure out how to use the thing. WTF?
