I'd recommend the iCurve for using your 17" PB as a desktop replacement.

I'd second the Brenthaven Shoulder Case for a bag/sleeve.

Have you updated OSX? Mine never gets uncomfortably hot in the handrest area, but then I hardly ever use it as a laptop but rather a desktop replacement. Some report cooler running with an OSX update. I use a slim monolith Tom Bihn sleeve which fits in my backpack perfectly.

My 17PB is also hot after couple of hours of continuous use. It's a bit uncomfortable for your lap especially in the summer time

I've never had a heat issue with my 17"...I've had it for several months and I work it like a horse. Your problem is perhaps abnormal; however, Apple would never do anything about it. The 12" are the notorious mini-suns, but the 17" hasn't had the same issue, as indicated in this and other forums. Are you setting it on something that does not allow good ventilation?

Get a coolpad, you can pack it along with you by removing the elevation pegs, use it on your lap, and it works for all 3 models. iCurve pretty much requires you use a external keyboard a mouse and you can't put it on your lap.

I have the Brenthaven shoulder bad and almost died at the price. But, it is extremely well-built and I feel much safer with it.

I have an iCurve and use it with an external mouse and keyboard (wireless). I love the iCurve because it lifts the computer up to a normal monitor level. It really takes away the ache in my neck that I had from hunching over laptops. Trust me - in 6-12months you'll feel in it in your neck and shoulders otherwise.

My PB17" has never been uncomfortably hot. The fan almost never comes on.

Can you take it to an Apple Store for a local diagnosis?
