So, I don't know what the heck happened to my Mom's iMac, but the files won't drag. I can't drag them to the trash can, and I can't drop files into folders, emails, or onto dock apps. What did my mom or I do? What can I do about it? Everything else works absolutely normally.

try deleting "com.apple.desktop.plist" in Preferences . Maybe that will do the trick !?

No dice. Found and deleted the file, restarted Finder, but to no avail. Still no dragging of files. Thanks for the help though. I'm completely baffled.

This is a known issue in Jaguar. Try Dragster. Fixed it for me.

But it hasn't done this for the year that she's already had the computer. Does an 'issue' just pop up when nothing like a reinstall or upgrade has happened?

It's a sporadic thing, probably a preference or cache file that has become corrupted. The problem is trying to figure out which one it is. It only ever happened to me the one time and Dragster fixed it (nothing else I tried did).

I think all Dragster does is delete a bunch of Finder preferences and caches - hopefully doing that will fix the problem. It's free anyway (well, donationware) so might as well give it a try.

Good luck

I've had the same bug in Jaguar. I fixed it by simply restarting. It would come back occasionally, but it was generally rare.

Thanks everyone. Rebooting seemed to fix it this time. Strange.
