I think it is a Microsoft/AOL conspiracy playing out...

I'm guessing it's a temporary file created by AOL to pass to WMP. Y'know, pretty much like the name and behavior indicate.
A much better question is: Why are you still using AOL?

You don't need to have AOL to see this temp page show up...

Chuckit: that's the issue -- none of us are using AOL. I've never ever had AOL.
I bet it happens on your mac, too.

Ah, my bad. I only ever saw it when I was using AOL. Don't recall seeing it since. Strange.
Oh well, never mind me.

same here. no AOL, but I get those links in my Safari URL window. No idea. I listen to mostly AM stations online and get this referrer link. I have learned to just ignore it

Not certain, but I can guess...
The website you're viewing wants to show the video inline on the page. Since that doesn't work very well unless you're using IE on Windows, they have a fallback. They try to detect when you have a browser where it will not work, and send you to a special page to load the video differently - mostlikely in the player directly. That it is called AOLTemp.html is likely because AOL has/had browser settings that were very restrictive, so it wouldn't work in the AOL browser despite the fact that it was based on on IE.
This said, I've never used AOL, but I know about the problems with getting stuff to load inline in the AOL browser anyway.

I don't think that's it, since the file is created in your temp directory rather than residing on the server.

Nope. Check out the Windows Media "listen" links on amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...sical&n=507846
When you click on one of these, it loads AOLTemp.html, and then the Windows Media Player app pops up and plays the WMA file - not inline.
