is os 9 inherently more stable than 8.6?

is os 9 inherently more stable than 8.6? i seem to crash a lot more at home with my blue G3 / os 8.6 than i do at work with my G4 / os 9.04
could it be the expanded USB support in 9.04 making the difference? i use USB devices on both machines and occaisionally lose control of my mouse prior to a crash in 8.6

OS's 8.6 and 9.04 (bar 9.1...) are the most stable MacOS's that have been released.
You shouldn't have problems with either of them.
I would suggest you try the standard troubleshooting routines, as your common problems on 8.6 don't seem particularly normal.
USB is a good place to start with the blame...
What peripherals do you have connected via USB?
The keyboard isn't plugged into a USB hub is it? (thats a bad idea...)

nope, the keyboard is connected directly to the mac.
logitech mouse (with new drivers) is connected to the keyboard
only other peripherals are my firewire external drive and a scsi card. (adaptec 2906)
think that plugging the mouse directly into the tower will help?

You shouldn't have to do that anyway 
Hm... think the boss would notice if you swapped the G4 for the B&W?
Just switch over the coloured panels, etc. 
Have you done all the usual stuff to it? (rebuild desktop, zap PRAM, trash prefs, etc...)

Have you done all the usual stuff to it? (rebuild desktop, zap PRAM, trash prefs, etc...)
everything but the prefs. that slipped my mind. thanks for the suggestions- i was getting kinda frustrated.

Could the new mouse driver be the cause? Has the old drivers been re-installed and tested out? Newest isn't always best. I just found that out on a scanner driver.

The answer is NO.
Plain and simple.
I support Macs for a living and there is no way in H#ll Mac OS v9 is more stable than 8.6.
The MacOS is inherently unstable by design up until Mac OS X. OS 9 aggravates this by introducing a new file system which breaks may older 3rd party products. Second to X, 8.6 is the best bet for consistent stability when using a wealth of 3rd party apps and extensions.
PS: One thing i'll give it: OS 9's USB implementation *is* superior to OS 8.6 - this may explain your better mileage with 9 at work.
