Innocuous, isn't it, that little plus sign. But I bought ten of the suckers, thinking I would burn my movie onto them with my iMac 1G flat-panel (Sony drive.)

Nope. "The disc was not recorded" is the error I get just as Toast starts burning the file. I thought it was just that disc, so I put another in--same message.

Then I put in a DVD-R from a batch I've used, and presto.

So my web search has not turned up the difference between DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs. The DVD Faq is rather vague about it, saying only that DVD+Rs have similar technology to DVD+RW, which doesn't help much.

Toast, however, says in the "disc info" box that the DVD+R is a "recordable CD," while the DVD-R is a "recordable DVD."

What the hell is going on, and will I even be able to use these DVD+Rs as data, not video discs?

A warning to look at the fine print--and plus signs--before buying.

If your drive supports only -R, then +R will not work.

Check my sig for some general info.

dvd+r's are generally used on set-top dvd recorders.

try selling the remaining ones you have on eBay or something..

in case of accidental ingestion, consult a mortician.

Thanks, Eug, for the great link.

Yes, we live and learn. I think I will sell the DVDs on eBay (where I bought them) but first, will they work if I just burn them as data disks? Then they might be worth holding on to.

Nope. DVD+R's will simply not work on DVD-R burners on all counts. Not even as data discs.

Hmm . . . that's good to know. I guess I'll get 'em ready for eBay!

Don't feel bad. I picked up a box of Memorex DVD+R and was standing in line to pay for them when I noticed the '+' sign. Not sure what it meant, I went back and saw another box of Memorex DVD-R. I figured there must be some difference, so luckily I got the DVD-R.

They really should have a better naming scheme.

Yeah, it's borderline deceptive advertising.
