It is with the heaviest of hearts that I convey the news of zigzag's passing.

I met him through these boards a few years ago, and we became good friends in the real world. He had a passionate love and encyclopedic knowledge of the Blues, Country, and R&B music, and was urbane, thoughtful, patient, and erudite. And most of all, a man of his word.

Through his over 6000 posts from the time he joined the MacNN boards, I'm sure that most here have stumbled across his writing or engaged in discussion with him. He was a valuable contibutor to our little online space, and I will miss his insight and humor.

If anyone cares to, please leave any thoughts, memories, or sympathies. I will collect and forward them to his family.

Godspeed, friend. You will be missed.

I can't believe it.

I liked Ziggy a lot -- never met him, but you could see things about a man though his posts. Just the other day I was thinking about his skepticism in politics and in audiophilia (similar snake pits).

I know I'll miss his POV.

Really sad.

WOW!

zigzag was always one to provide a sensible take on any rant. His moderation and insight will CERTAINLY be missed. Any word on how he left this world?

Terrible news. I am shaken.

May he rest in peace.

Whether I agreed with him or not, I always enjoyed reading his point of view on different matters. His thoughtful posts will definitely be missed.

This comes as a shock.

I'm sad to hear this news.

scottib, is there somewhere we can send flowers, some group zigzag wanted donations made?
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Ziggy was an empiricist, and not much of a romanticist. When Iooking at some of his old posts, I came across this:

I never got this either. People scoff at the fantasies of children and lunatics, then ask them to believe in even more fantastical things, including an adult version of Santa Claus.

Humans are vain and have powerful imaginations, a deadly combination. They like to think they were put here for a special purpose and that a divine being speaks to and acts upon them. If they didn't, Benny Hinn would be selling shoes in a mall somewhere. The sad fact is that in 80 years or so, even the youngest among us will be fertilizer. There is no Magic Spirit World. Dust to dust and all that.

Life is short. Enjoy it while you can.
I wonder what he found out...but whatever the case, we would do well to listen to his entreaty to enjoy what we can while we can.

Sad news indeed.

He was one of the smartest, clear thinking, funny and friendly people to post here at MacNN. I often wished I had his calm and collectedness when discussing things. A real inspiration.

R.I.P.

Have you been touched by his noodly appendage?

Truly at a loss for words. One of the most fascinating people that I have ever met.. online or in person. I've often rambled about our silly interactions online with my closest friends. Wish I could have met the man in person. Hell, I would have paid for the first round.

We'll miss you bud.

May Jennifer Anniston find you.

I am sitting here with tears in my eyes and in a bit of shock. ZigZag was one of the very few treasures of personality, rational calm and insight of this board. I don't really know what to say. I don't know why it always seems that the good guys go early. May he rest in peace and may his family overcome this time of sorrow with the knowledge that he was someone special.

Just about all of them. Some of my favorite memories are from the pre-politics/war lounge. Pretty much any thread that a mod had to threaten lockination over off-topic rambling was sure to contain a golden moment. I wish the search went back that far.

As zigzag used to say..

I knew Zigzag only as light emitted from diodes in my screen. He inhabited my world as ones and zeroes that formed words. But what light he emitted and how often I wished I had his way with words! Perhaps moreso than anyone else who frequents this virtual space, Zigzag was able to influence people's opinions with his rational and eloquent way of putting his ideas into words. His passing is a great loss to this community but he leaves it and the people who remain a part of it, richer for his presence.

A moment of silence, here.

My condolences to those who knew him in real life, and his family. A sad day.

Others have said the things I would have, and far more eloquently than I could right now, but I don't know what else to do other than add my voice to the mourning. His insightful and witty posts made him a credit to these forums, and doubtless to others as well. I only hope that his passing was an easy one, in whatever way the term 'easy' applies to such things.

To me, Zigzag was a kindred spirit in a lot of ways. He often said exactly what I was thinking, though he had more tact and elegance in his expression. I'm sad in his passing, but I think he would take comfort that memory of him will not fade quickly. If there is a better place, I'm sure he's there. If there is not, then at least his presence made this world better.
