So... finally tried to actually listen to some music. Dock works well providing line-out. Headphone socket useless for headphones by Shure and Sennheiser.

Houston, we have a problem.

Is there an adapter available? Crazy I have to drop some more $$ just to use some headphones.

So... answering myself after a quick search.

There is this monstrosity by Belkin: Hands-on with Belkin's iPhone Headphone Adapter - Engadget Mobile and they want me to pay them to use that thing?!

Apple has something designed for TTY users; might it work for regular headphones too? The Apple Store (U.S.) - Apple iPhone TTY Adapter

My gawd, Apple should have just stuck a freaking huge antenna on the iPhone. What uglification :-(

Yeah, I'm kinda bummed my current headphones wont fit into the iPhone jack. But that just gives me an excuse to get some new ones. I saw these at the Apple Store. I know V-Moda headphones are supposed to be pretty good. And these have a mic on the cord like the included Apple ones. But I don't think it has the same functionality as Apple's (the squeeze to do stuff function).

I wonder if Apple engineers actually saw this coming...

Yeah, my Shure buds won't fit, and I don't understand what Apple was thinking. I'm not keen on what Belkin is offering (could they have made it any longer and dorkier looking? ), so I'll wait for someone else to offer something. If Apple's adapter works, at least it's a little smaller.

shure is coming out with black cable with mic and control switch that allows you to use your own earphones - $39.99. Doesn't have that cool Apple switch that allows for skipping songs though

I've got an iShuffle sport case that is waterproof. It has a headset adapter to seal the case that looks like it will fit just fine as a headphone adapter on the iPhone. I'll dig it up and give it a try. Its this case:

I tested the pigtail that comes with the iShuffle Sport Case.

I plugged my Bose QuietComfort2 Headset into my iPhone and it worked perfectly

I bought the Belkin iPhone Headphone Adapter and a Radio Shack 3/32" Stereo Jack to 1/8" Stereo Plug Adapter for my Plantronics wired headset, but it added more than 4-inches to my iPhone. Very unsightly! I ended up doing what stevesnj did with his right angle adapter and now the length is a reasonable 2-inch high adapter. This way I don't have to toss my three $50.00 headsets that I use ;-)

I would bet that Apple, or another company makes a small adapter for the port. The adapters now are just too big.

i trimmed down the jack plastic on my headphones last night and they work great with my iPhone. However, I miss the pause/resume/next track functionality of the mic/switch combo on the supplied earbuds. Hopefully someone will make non-earbud headphones with the same mic/switch functionality found in the stock iPhone earbuds.
