New Tibook, partitioned so that I have 9.2.2 on one drive. iTunes is not enabled on this drive.
When I slip in an audio CD it plays just fine, but what is doing it? And, more importantly, how do I control the tracks?
Shouldn't there be at least a control strip module which lets me select tracks?

QuickTime is responsible for the automatic CD playback.
There IS a Control Strip module for CD playback. It looks like a little CD. You click on it and it gives you standard CD player controls.
You should also have the AppleCD Audio Player application in your Applications folder.

This is a TiBook out of the box 4 days ago. There is no Apple CD player, but there is a DVD player. I found the control strip thingie on a set of extensions from another machine and it works fine.

I think you'd be wise to install iTunes. It's one of the most comprehensive MP3 applications on the market, and it has kick-ass CD playing and ripping features to boot.

Apple CD audio player should be in the Apple Extras folder in Applications (Mac OS9). If it doesn't ship anymore, try downloading it from Apple (which might be hard to find) or find a link by searching for it on versiontracker.com

I would still recommend installing iTunes instead of using Apple CD Audio Player.

Oh, I've been an iTunes user ever since it was available, even when I had to hack it to use it while running OS 8.6.
But I've always had trouble keeping it compatible with Toast. Currently I use Toast 5.1.1 on either my 9.2 partition or in OSX. I run iTunes in OSX.
While booted into my 9.2.2 partition I slipped in the audio CD & was just confused about which app was playing it. I still find it curious that I've had to purloin the control strip module from another machine to have control over track selection, etc.
In fact, my first thought was that the Apple DVD/CD combo was calling upon the DVD player app to run the CD. But, noooo..

Thanks for clarifying your intention. I thought you wanted to use something else to play CD's.
Why are you playing CD's, anyway? Rip them to your hard disk!
