every so often I have IE crash. I am normally using the search or my favorites when it happens. Are there any steps that I can take to rectify the situation? It always happens at the worst time.

try trashing the Explorer folder (and all its contents, EXCEPT the Favorites.html file because that is your Bookmarks file), this folder is in the Preferences folder in your System Folder.

and then restart, rebuild desktop, then launch IE and quit it and place the Favorites.html back where it belongs...

use techtool 1.2.1, freeware, available HERE for rebuilding desktop
