Though I should mention I don’t feel the ages match up. The home movies are aesthetically 70s when they should be 80s. Most of that could be handwaved away as matter of taste, but not the tennis racket. In the 80s, unfathomably rich people obsessed with winning used the oversized kind.

Counterpoint: many tennis players continue to use the racquets they learned on and are comfortable with. They often don’t adopt newer model trends because it often involves changing your playing style to some degree.

Finished out S3 of Succession. Liked it more than the second, but not the powerhouse of the first. Kind of a slow burn which doesn’t really pay off until the last two episodes. Excellent setup for the final season.

Was so stoked for the second season of “Foundation”. Watched the first episode last night and almost want to stop watching. Stupid underwater “omg we made it just in time why the fuck is a huge circuit breaker the computer reboot switch” action stunts and cryptic maths mysticism do not mix with one another, let alone with the legacy of one Isaac Asimov. Nor does looking at cute virtual ribbons showing exactly what the path of psychohistory is in red. I mean, sheesh.

Season one was good enough to give them the benefit of the doubt, but boy…

Now we’re watching Disraeli the Romantic, which I remember from Masterpiece Theatre when I was, like, 10. Too sophisticated for me back then, so I’m glad to loop back around. It’s got many of the usual issues with 40-year-old British television. It’s not very dynamic. It does have great costumes tho.

Ian McShane plays Disraeli, and Ian he McShanes-up the place.

The emergency aspect caused me to not be paying close enough attention, and started with S3.

I’m liking it. Don’t mind being thrown into the middle at all. Glad Bunk is in it.

Watched The Last Enemy. BBC spy thriller miniseries from the late aughts about “Total Information Awareness”. Ridiculously prescient. Only big thing it misses is AI.

I keep forgetting about Sprung. I think we watched the first three or four episodes, got distracted, and haven’t gone back. That happens a lot with us. We haven’t watched much of the new season of Only Murders... for the same reason, mostly. We don’t really give a crap about the Broadway show bullshit, either, so there’s that.

Started The Boys. It’s not awful, but it’s not giving me anything that hasn’t already been done better by Alan Moore.

The normie lead is brilliant. He understands how to play a comic book character, and I’m bowled over by how well he can both be a sad sack and utterly charming with massive screen presence.

Found Sprung on Amazon. So far, it's fun and odd seeing dilahunt playing a nice person.

I am trying to "finish" hulu before their price increase oct 18 and disney Nov 1. They are conspiring to raise their rates to ridiculous levels, in the hopes of getting you to do a Hulu/Disney+ combo. $18 for hulu alone and $14 for disney alone, vs $20 for them both together no ads. I already pay for basic cable if I want ads, dammit.

Justified: Primeval City ended well. It seemed a bit justified lite, perhaps because of a kid, perhaps because no harlan... but it ended well with a possible teaser for more with a favorite character. You did not need to have watched all of orig justified to follow this season.

Futurama reboot: Some of the new eps are funny but not groundbreaking.

Archer final season: am enjoying it.

Primeval: Not bad british scifi, personable cast, but I wasn't sure it was worth investing in more than a few episodes.

You're the worst: Funny, but ilke most shows with unlikeable characters, it feels kind of ... gross.

Kevin from work: had promise but fell flat and at one season not worth it.

what else is on hulu that I should watch before my subscription is over? I suspect Disney+ will lure me back in because... LOKI.

I liked the show a lot, though I think it went on one season too many. The first season or two, though, is pretty brilliant stuff. Aya Cash is highly underrated, and I could watch Kether Donohue tearing-up the scenery all day.

The show did deliver one of the best series-ending quotes ever.

It does help to be living a life with severe clinical depression to understand some of the stuff Gretchen says and does, though.

Rise of Empires: Ottoman

This is excellent, and filled some big holes in my historical knowledge. Unusually for this type of thing, the dramatic re-enactments come close to standing on their own. The actor who plays Mehmed is really, really good.

It’s a Turkish documentary, so it’s very pro-Ottoman. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just unusual from my western perspective.

Started in on S2 of The Boys. First two episodes were kinda dull. I’m curious where it goes, and it has a good gag or two each episode, but overall it’s kinda meh. Homelander is entertaining, and totally knows how to work a cape.

Band of Brothers has landed on Netflix, in its full unedited form. Always a good watch.

Accompanying BoB is its “followup” series The Pacific, which follows a company of Marines through the Pacific theater of WWII. I’ve managed to get through two or episodes of it and I’m not sure I’ll watch the rest. It’s just not very good. It’s trying so, so, hard to capture the magic that made BoB so compelling, and it just doesn't work. It all just feels so forced, whereas BoB unfolded naturally. Anyway, big “pass” on The Pacific for me.

It has everything that qualifies Star Wars, but I have ZERO invested in the characters. They feel like puppets going through all the motions of what the story needs to happen, plus a whole bunch of crap that is just „show me stuff we already know“. I don’t need to see ten minutes of basic Jedi training with the blind visor and „feeling“ the force. We all saw that in 1977. Yeah, gratuitous space battles and *yawn* lightsaber fights. Oooo the other guy has a double-bladed…yeah. Oooo he can turn it into a lightsaber propellor things. Amazisnooze.

The alien cat-pet-thingy gets more interest than the main characters.
