Bluey is arguably a parenting show that kids can watch, too.

Very different shows. I lived the Ren & Stimpy era, but it really is more of a subversive pre-teen & older show.

Bluey is a true kids show that can be genuinely enjoyed by all ages.

Neither of these traits disqualified MAD Magazine from being the total shit when I was 7.

I mean this is probably a generational thing. I can’t exactly remember what MAD was like, but I’m pretty sure no 7yos I know of would be reading it today.

Why?

That’s not a challenge. Well… not yet at least.

I can think of dozens of possibilities, but I’m not sure which you think are relevant.

Again, I haven’t seen a MAD magazine in maybe 25 years, but the obvious answer is that I don’t think the content was terribly appropriate for most 7yos I know.

It’s the same reason my kids haven’t yet watched Princess Mononoke or Blair Witch Project, or read 1984. I’m sure they will at some point, but I don’t think they’re ready yet.

Bluey is a really great show.

Here’s one I distinctly remember. Where I got it says it’s from 1974. If true, I must have read a reprint, so I couldn’t tell you how old I was.

The last panel on this page is where they decided to draw the line.

The rest is three more pages of the same, which I’ll spare you because it’s rather tedious.

In terms of what we’re talking about, the beauty of this cartoon is the structure is about as complicated as Sesame Street. It provides unambiguous guidance to the more complicated themes it presents.

That’s what stands out to me as the bigger question with MAD of that era. Is it giving guidance a parent is comfortable with?

I remember reading mad when I was maybe 12ish? I liked the folding pages. But then I had older siblings to leave things like that around.
Ren and Stimpy is def not a kids show.
I've only seen a little Bluey but it looks calming and not terribly annoying. (I think I watched a few episodes when I was sick and could find nothing else on.)

Fallout

Liked the first 30 mins. Sat though the rest. Not sure I can be motivated to watch more. In some ways it feels like I've seen it all before in other shows. Unfair? The youth seem to like it very much.

At least its not Rebel Moon.

Yeah, it’s interesting. Through 3 episodes myself. It’s kind of like a Silo **Ricky Gervais voice** without all that….prestige. Not necessarily in a bad way, it just really embraces the gore and schlock.

3 Body Problem

No mentions or discussions so far? I had reasonably low expectations but I have to say I was hooked from minute 1 to minute the end. Benedict Wong is excellent, nanofibre babe is... not.
Red Wedding adjacent scene in Ep5 is mad but manages not to overwhelm the show. Cast is established to be as expendable as they were in GoT, which is fun!
A solid 9/10 watch.
minus half a point for weak assing the theme tune/opening credits especially after GoT

3 Body Problem was just not good in my opinion. But that one scene with the ship was quite a spectacle.

Shogun is not perfect — the main actor seems to be channeling a homeless man’s Tom Hardy which is throwing me off — but it’s really good after 7 episodes.

LOL. Olds, like me, see him channeling Richard Burton. He’s doing a really spot-on impersonation. I suppose that implies Tom Hardy is an imitation Burton as well.

I watched it, but remember very little. I would have been 9.

One Chamberlain joint I didn’t see, but remember being all the rage was The Thorn Birds. This just irritated me for preempting shows I wanted to watch.

Peak Chamberlain for me were the Musketeer movies..

Star Trek: Prodigy (originally on nick and paramount+, since moved to Netflix)

This is a CGI animated show, generally billed as a kid show. It does work for kids, but they put in the effort to serve adults too.

If you liked the 90s treks (TNG, DS9, Voy), then Prodigy has what is lacking in more recent fare. I enjoyed Season 1 all the way through (S2 will be generally released sometime this year). The show opens approximately 5 years after Voyager returned to Earth.

Finally got around to the Mandalorian.

First season is pretty good.

We’re on episode 3 of season 2.
Does it recover, or does it continue being complete shit? We won’t waste our time then.

Fun fact: The intro/prologue to the Book of Boba Fett was deliberately edited to match the timing of Patton Oswalt's filibuster (about the events depicted in it) from Parks & Rec.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Shame. The insipid formula of ten-minute intro with arrival on whatever world is supposed to solve his problem, then the special challenge for this game level — the one that the people who can help him have been struggling with for years but that only he can overcome by his Ruthlessness — (oh look it's a quote from the original trilogy! Yay, fan service! except they've changed a line to something about "the way" hahaha), garnished with random side characters that appeared in the background of some random scene somewhere in the original trilogy that screw him over, do him favours, or try to kill him… the tedium just isn't made up for by the actual story reveal in Episode 4.

My wife started calling actual lines of dialogue literally seconds before they came on, verbatim.

I really wanted to like the Mandalorian, and the first season really had me, to a point.

Oh well. I might carry on through the end of Season 2 on my own then, if you say it's worth it.

Season 2 is Baby Yoda Reaction GIF Generator.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7EB4ZYWKYI

Boba Fett ties in to Mandalorian and kind of ends up as a bonus Mandalorian season, but suffers because all of the bad guys have to fight in slow motion so that the geriatric good guys can keep up.

Season 3 is no better, eh?

Boba Fett as a series piques exactly zero of my fucks.

Ahsoka was a terrific disappointment. I had more emotional invest in the main character's cat-thing-pet than in her (was she Ahsoka? Or was Ahsoka the female mentor? Can't remember; don't care).

Boba Fett sucked so hard I didn’t even finish it. Just terrible.
I never understood the love-on Star Wars nerds have for Ahsoka. I didn’t even take a look at the series. Frankly, I think Star Wars as a whole is tapped-out.

Eh. I really couldn’t get into Andor either. Maybe I’m the one that’s tapped-out on Star Wars? I liked Mandalorian okay, though I would have preferred no Grogu.

star wars series:
Andor was great because it was so different. Like Rogue 1.
Mandalorian, loved most of this, although I admit some of season 2 lagged, and grogu's control of his powers is conveniently sporadic.
Obi Wan. Disappointing, with some enjoyable bits. I finished it but wished it had followed the plot of some good books that covered what Obiwan did between movies 3/4.
Ahsoka. Disappointing and could not finish it.
Boba Fett: I feel like I watched this but don't remember much of it at all.

Live-action series
The Mandalorian 1 93% (339 reviews)[187] 70 (29 reviews)[188]
2 93% (451 reviews)[189] 76 (14 reviews)[190]
3 85% (240 reviews)[191] 70 (15 reviews)[192]
The Book of Boba Fett 1 66% (200 reviews)[193] 59 (19 reviews)[194]
Obi-Wan Kenobi 1 82% (358 reviews)[195] 73 (19 reviews)[196]
Andor 1 96% (608 reviews)[197] 74 (31 reviews)[198]
Ahsoka 1 86% (266 reviews)[199] 68 (25 reviews)[200]

Boba Fett was too Rodriguez-y, like a watered down Spy Kids.

Kenobi felt like fanfic.

After dropping The Mandalorian at S02E04, we started with Slow Horses, and are enjoying it a lot. My wife is not predicting every turn of events, we're wrong often enough about what we think is going on, and dialogue and story are great. Great characters, genuinely interesting, good backstories, revealed piecemeal, but actually enthralling (in contrast to Ahsoka, where I really tried, but simply could not give a fuck about any of the characters, and The Mandalorian, where any real interest/sympathy was thwarted by the one-dimensionality of the characters and their stories. Yeah, the Mandalorian was caught up in an Imperial raid, his parents killed, as he was saved and adopted by a fundamentalist Mandalorian sect. We get it. Yes, you can show us the same footage again, with a few more seconds of robots and running. We get it. Oh, the Imperial honcho is familiar with your record because you were caught up in an Imperial raid, your parents killed, as you were saved and adopted by a fundamentalist Mandalorian sect. Why not show us some more of that footage, to illustraSHUT UP ALREADY).

What a refreshing change from that stupid show Slow Horses is. No Baby Yoda, though. Lamb has decidedly less cute appeal.

I saw an interview with George Lucas somewhere where he noted that the reason people didn't like the prequels is that they weren't twelve years old anymore.

I can see that argument, and I think it applies to some extent to these series.

It does not take into account though, that 40+ year-olds will happily devour content aimed at twelve-year-olds if it's not shit.

I don't think any of the recent stuff has been shit. I'm not going to rant and rave about it, but it scratches my Star Wars itches just fine. Just don't take it too seriously and its fine.

I do think they are getting better at doing more original elements rather than shoehorning the original trilogy characters into every possible corner of every story they tell endlessly. They are walking a lot of lines at once and I don't know they could do that substantially better than they have been.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Acolyte definitely gets the anti-woke crowd riled up.

I don't get the scores though. Critics love it, audiences hate it (or it's getting review-bombed) when IMO it's solidly "meh".
