What about "miniMac"? Not PowerMac, but miniMac... and it contains the string "iMac" too!

no iPod Shuffle for me

You can plug it into a USB 1.0 port.

My only 'whine point' would be no upgrade price for iLife. I'm not sure how happy I will be if iLife turns out to be a $80 subscription.

Especially if the trend of consistent updates keep up:

iLife: $80
iWork: $80
Quicktime Pro: $30
.Mac: $100
OS X: $120
------

$410 every 12-18 months for software. An iLife/iWork bundle would be nice. Both for $120 or something.

My only complaint is that the only part of iLife I really care about upgrading is iPhoto, and that's a pretty steep price to pay.

I also think they should have announced Aluminum 15" and 17" LCD displays, as their low-end displays are severely lacking.

I'm curious to see how well the Mac mini does. It is certainly a beautiful device but the lack of a keyboard and mouse confuses me a little bit, and might put off first-time Mac buyers. (A lot of PCs still don't use USB keyboards.)

Other than that, the announcements were right on the mark. The iPod Shuffle is a total bargain. It's priced around the same amount as a decent flash drive of similar capacity, plus you get Apple beauty and music to boot.

I'm picking up a 1 GB iPod Shuffle to complement my 40 GB. I think it will be fantastic for the gym and short excursions out on the town where carring my $400 iPod makes me nervous or is cumbersome. The new iTunes features (AutoFill, data/music ratio, and automatic scaling-down of songs to 128 kbps AAC) are brilliant. The only thing I worry about is that my 4G iPod might start to collect dust...

is it safe to say that new powerbooks will come out during some press event in the next 2-3 months and that pro tower updates will be released at the developers conference in the summer?

that's my take on it thus far. i really wished the "one more thing..." was the powerbook updates. but i guess i'll stick with getting a new iBook for now.

I don't get what on this green earth made any of you think that G5 powerbooks were ready.

I'm not really happy that the price of iLife has gone up, but I'm toying with the idea of waiting till Tiger is shipping, and picking up Mac mini. With iLife, Tiger, and Quicken (going to get one of these days), it pushes the cost of the Mac down to like $250. Not too shabby.

I also hope that the RAM is easily upgradeable.

And what's all this complaining about core image? You're wanting to use this thing with Motion? I think you've got the wrong box. Its going to run stuff fine. A PC priced this low would have integrated graphics. Good luck running longhorn on that.

That's exactly what I am going to do! The mini is the perfect living room computer for movies and music and then I can ban my ****ing loud Quicksilver - I won't get anything faster though but if you're not a hardcore gamer you don't need anything faster anyway!

I got one: I wanted Autofill to work with my iPod mini. I got 45GB library so that could come in handy for me.

And the Mac mini really should have had a keyboard and mouse.

And I think my PowerBook warned me yesterday to not buy one of these new Mac minis: he fried the powersupply. Bought a new one this morning. 80 for frickin' powerbrick.

I have one.

The iPod Shuffle's dock. It is not a proprietary interface like the other iPod docks. It is just a USB cable glued into a hunk of plastic.
Yet it is $30? That is a huge ripoff, cut that price down to $19.95 and still make a nice profit.

I don't get what the complaint about "no mouse and keyboard." I Everytime you buy a new Mac you get a Keyboard and mouse. I've got about 3 USB Mac Keyboards at home from various different newer generation Macs. Why would I need another with the Mac mini? also this whole gripe about a 2 button Mac mouse. GET OVER IT! Apple will probably NEVER come out with it because they don't view it as necessary. Then again I never thought they would come out with a 499 Mac so what do I know. I find that unless you are power user you DON'T need a 2 button mouse. From doing tech support I know too many windows users who get confused when the mouse has more than one button. When you tell them to double click the right click. When you tell them to double left click they still right click. When you tell them to right click the left click. For the general home user the multi button mouse it too confusing. That is why I doubt that Apple will come out with a 2 button mouse. Like I said, I never thought they would come out with a 499 Mac so what do I know. They might surprise us all.

Yes, YOU as a Mac user has these USB keyboards. Switchers are the ones that are going to have to buy new keyboards and mice. I know 0 people who have a USB keyboard on their PC (except those with wireless keyboards that have a USB dongle).

And I don't have an excess of keyboards either. When I sell a mac I sell it with the keyboard ya know.

True but according to Apple you can plug in just about ANY USB keyboroard or wireless keyboard with USB Dongle into this thing. how much is a USB Keyboard and mouse? Considering you can use any USB Keyboard into it I don't see it as a big issue. Also if anyone has bought a new keyboard recently many of them come with the USB adapter for it.

big deal, Logitech makes a $40 KB/mouse combo that works perfectly. Personally, I'd rather have it over the Apple set.

first, i think apple did a great job with all the new releases!
but,

1. apple should have ditched the eMac for an iMac mini...
that name would have been better for the entry-level consumer mac (G4) vs. the more powerful consumer iMac (G5).
specs are ok, size and pricetag are great!
there should have been an option to buy a matching keyboard, mouse and 15" lcd display for an extra $300 in order to replace the eMac.

2. apple should have upgraded their powerbooks BEFORE MWSF!
where's the power in the current powerbooks? i'm not asking for a G5 (would be great though), but a little bump in GHz, bigger and - most of all - faster HD, more RAM to start with, SuperDrive as a standard... it would differentiate the powerbook from an ibook or a mac mini, and live up to it's pricetag!
maybe they'll do it in a week or so, but it's to late... with all the attention drawn to the apple store, the damage is done: the powerbook looks ridiculously expensive for what you get!

that's all folks; apart from these two points, i'm a happy macfanatic!

I'd say 10.4 is the only upgrade there that's really 'required.' You can also spend $350 every 1.5 years to upgrade Office. Personally, I'm not buying iLife 05, even though I still think it's a great deal. I don't use iPhoto anymore, and I've hardly ever used iMovie or iDVD.
