I'm looking for feedback on Dungeons & Dragons Online? I was in a store today and saw a Strategy Guide for it and it looked good. I was curious about the gameplay.

I play it - My impressions were mixed.

I'm a geek from way back and played the PnP game and so was suitably excited. Basically, it comes down to two things for me.

1) This will be either love or hate - Their is no balance. Unlike other MMO's that are a constand struggle for the developers to balance out the characters (mainly lead by PvP). Not so in DDO i.e. I played a rogue and had trouble playing through the 1st newbie mission (while new to the game)without getting killed. Then did it with a fighter and just breezed through. I played the fighter and what really made me smile was one of those "realisation" moments when after smashing my way through a dungeon (and being able to complete it) I was stanfding in front of a locked door, chest of treasure on the other side - and I would never get at it on my own. I really appreciated that, and its what the game is about. Specialisation. You take a rogue along - not because you NEED one, but because its more fun. the usual "is my character gimped threads have died out somewhat because at the end of the day - you'll never be going toe to toe with other players.

2) Content. This is a bit of a dead horse thats being flogged, but with no expansive outdoor areas in favour of instanced dungeons, and one main city as a setting... things just seem a little cramped and that there isnt as much content. I must say though that the content is MUCH better thought out than the standard "here's an area, lets fill it with monsters". I was redoing a mission for the 8th or so time (you'll repeat missions) and i found a completely new area by jumping across roof-beams. Same thing when I fell into a pool I'd always just walked past "Hey there's a door down here!".

It really isnt single-player friendly though. I live with a couple of mates who play, and even then I'd find myself unable to play because I was on my own. (I could have made more of an effort into finding players ingame though - but thats just a me thing).

I recently discovered CoV and was drawn by the fact that if I wanted to- I could play on my own.

I hate it when people dont give me a straight answer, but thats DDO for you.

I do love the game. My issue (which I still havent completely worked out) is that it has a subscription fee. So can I justify paying for it when I feel that my enjoyment comes from playing with my mates, or on my own and I cant play if they arent around. And once I get to the end... what is there to do - other than redo missions?

I hope thats a help - I've tried to be honest. I do like the game. I just dont know if I will keep my subscription. I would seriously suggest finding a trial key. Worth a look 110%!

If you have no worries teaming up with strangers or you're a guild-type - then you'll not have the same issues I have.

A friend of mine suggested that I tried the 7-day free trial, but I see nowhere that it is availible on OS X. When I sign up for the trial, all I get is a PC download, where is the OS X download?

damn, got me all excited about playing it on my G5 for a sec. I've played it before though, and it's actually pretty good if you have friends to play with. The best part is that you don't need to play for 80 hours every week so you can get more imaginary powers.

I played DDO on my pc over a month ago and the game is kind of suck imo.
