I'd like to replace the stock 80 GB HD for a brand new Western Digital 500 GB HD with a SATA interface in my G4 iMac 1.25 ghz.

If anyone has any expertise on this question, I'd appreciate any replies.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you'll need a PATA (parallel), not SATA drive for a G4 iMac. Any 3.5" PATA drive will work.

Indeed he does... do the G4 iMacs support LBA48? You need it for hard drives over 137GB.

Here's the options for the drive you want, I'd go with the Seagate 7200.10.

It seems they do, at least the last generation which the poster seems to have. Makes sense, as the MDDs (which do have it, I know that) were released before, but it was still somewhat surprising.

Both the 17" model and the 20" model support drives larger than 128GB. I’m glad of this—one of the upgrades I’ll be carrying out when I finally get around to cracking my beloved G4 iMac open.

Whilst you’re in there (seeing as it’s a bit of a pain in the ass to open), you may want to install more RAM in the engineer slot (it supports a 1GB DIMM in each slot), and maybe even internal BlueTooth. If you do decide to install the BT, don’t forget to buy the antenna extension cable as well. (I stupidly didn’t buy it when I got the module.)

I believe you, but I don't see it on that page. What's your source?

It’s under the “Standard Hard Drive” section on both the pages I linked to previously:
